Hard to tell on my monitor, but is that sand or snow covering the ballast in #1

Looks like beach-type sand to me. It's definitely not snow.

And at least that station is not like a lot of other Amtrack stations that remind me of those photo processing booths you'd see out in the middle of some strip mall parking lot. Gear List
