I have a couple POTN neck straps that I like very much! They are really comfortable around my neck! The question I have is about the quick release buckles on the straps. I like going to Airshows and I will have two cameras hanging around my neck, one will be a 40D with grip(two batteries) with my 100-400L . This combo is really heavy and my concern is, are the quick release buckles safe for this? Please don't tell me to use a tripod or monopod because these events get crowded and you have to move fast to get the shots. Sometimes when I let the 100-400 hang I hook the tripod ring on the lens onto the pocket of my photog vest to take the weight off of my neck and strap, but I'm afraid if I forget to do this my beloved 40D and 100-400L will be laying on the ground because of the quick releases giving out. Has anyone ever tested to see how strong these are? Should I give up the comfort of this strap and get something different? Or am I worrying too much about nothing?
Mike

claybuster,
I don't know the actual weight amount...
I have for hours had my 5D with 580ex flash and 100-400L lens hanging via the POTN strap (thank goodness not the Canon strap,my neck thanks me each time) on many occasions and never had a problem.

Yeah,I know what you mean about the Canon strap, I tried it with the 100-400 and 40D thats why I switched to the POTN:D So I guess I'm worrying about nothing. Thanks!

A 40d grip and 100-400mm is fly weight" compared to what I often put my POTN straps through,.

think 1D MkII with it's fat NiCad battery mounted to a 500mm.
I have a POTN strap with long strap option on the 500mm (approx 8 pounds)

In this case, my own ability to carry the assembly is by far the limiting factor, with the 100-400mm, I can carry that set up all day no problem.

I wonder if anyone has ever done a test on these straps to see how strong they are? I think I'll try nailing the two ends that go to the camera body to the side of my garage and then put the strap around the bumper hitch of the old 96 Bronco beast and floor it. Wouldn't it be cool to see me on Americas funniest videos pulling down the side of my garage?:D

I bet the nails gives long before the strap does, or at least the nails tear out of the strap.

You would need to make a total loop by clipping the connectors together and then test it that way, say trailer hitch to steel fence post embedded in concrete..
Then I bet the clasps go first.

I've carried 1D series bodies and large telephoto lenses all day long without incident or fear with my POTN strap...I think the clips are a whole lot stronger than we suspect. My 100 pound lab had one on his collar that never failed when he was trying to drag me up a tree to catch his buddy the squirrel.

Never worry about my POTN strap. Today I walked around for 5 hours with my 40D gripped, 17-55 IS and 580EX II. Neck did not hurt a bit at the end of the day.

I've had 20D w/ grip 430EX and 70-200 F2.8 or 100-400L on mine for many hours.

I Bought the Op/Tech strap brand new and it was faulty. One of the loop straps where it is sewn to the leather piece came off after light tension was applied ... I guess the string was cut up or not sewn properly so the loop strap pulled right out. Re-sewn it with nylon string and it is good as new now ... Just make sure you inspect the straps carefully. If I would have thrown the 40D with 70-200 on there .. well ... yea.

They are Not comfortable .. specially when you add more weight. Mine always felt like they were digging/cutting into my neck. Plus, after a bit of shooting (specially in the sun), they itch some.
