I'm looking for a super wide angle lense for my Rebel XTI. I was looking at this lense here which I have read some good reviews on. I was chatting with someone who mentioned a fixed lense was a better choice. I was kinda eyeing this lense from sigma but what are your thoughts and has anyone used this lense ( Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM ). My budget is around $500-$600 for a wide angle lense. Thanks in advance guys........;)

I would go for the canon 10-22, but thats only because I like to use Canon lenses. I'm also a noob so take my advice with a grain of salt.

I've recently purchased the Sigma 10-20mm and I'm happy with it, I use it with my 400D/XTi.

Have a scan of the Sigma 10-20mm Archive for samples and I believe there are a few threads floating around for this lens;

It cost around $550 USD, however, I'm based in the UK and I bought it from a UK store for around £280.

I've found it for as low as $440 dollars here from an online source. If anyone has a link for a cheaper price post it. The link you sent has some amazing pictures with that lense. I can't wait to get the skill needed for some of those shots.

www.us1photo.com (external link) was the cheapest I found. No issues with them came as discribed. $429.50 shipped

The reviews I read claim the Sigma lense is damn near comparable and in some cases on par with the Canon. Am I correct to assume manufacturers lenses are better than third party or is this not the case.

It varies depending on the specific lens you're comparing, in general yes BUT this is a huge generalisation.

But yeah your options really are Sigma 10-20 (which I have and love) Canon 10-22 (slightly better but not my a lot) and the Tokina 10-17 if you want a fisheye.

So comparing the same lense in the catagory of around 20mm it seems I have choices of Canon, Sigma and Tokina but which would be the more sharp, crisp and clear of the choices.........I'm confused and looking to buy within the next week. I will be taking myt first trip to San Franciso's Fisherman's Warf so I definately want to try out my new toys.

Get the Sigma...$100 less than Canon 10-22 and comes with 4 year warranty, case, and lens hood. Canon only comes with 1 year. Absolutely LOVE my Sigma. Favorite lens by far.
