I have a chance to purchase a 17-40 water damaged lens and wonder if it can be fixed easily by Canon. I called Irvine and the guy said they won't know until the tech opens up the lens and the ball park estimate he said is around $250 or so.

The owner said it was in the trunk and water leaked in so I assume it was fresh water and not salt water.

Has anyone had their lens in water and repaired by Canon?

Thanks

That's a pretty accurate, estimate. Mostly just glass in the thing, the electronics and motor may need replacing. But your out some money if the seller isn't being completely honest with you.

Would you buy a car that has been through a flood? Even if they say they fixed it? I would not. Less resale value and who knows what will go bad next.

^^^^^ Ditto. Besides, the original owner probably already looked into getting it fixed. The 17-40 is a great lens, and I'm sure the original owner would have looked into getting it fixed first. If he's attempting to sell, then there's certainly a reason. Pass on this one.

I agree, I'd pass on it. There are plenty of these lenses out there, and I've seen them go for $450 - $500, which considering whatever your purchase price of the flooded lens is, plus any repair costs, you might come close to reaching that number anyway.

Thanks guys, I'll pass on this.

Even thought the offer price is great ($175), you're right that with the repair cost it'll come close to the used price.

I'll continue to use the 24-70 for my wide shots or borrow my friend's 17-40 for now :D

Thanks

Will it still manual focus?

Can you get it for less?

Ever see one of those Carfax reports? Water damaged lens .... *fixed* new cleaned inside and out lens. Haha, I say you're better off paying a bit more from someone selling that particular lens off this forum or maybe a little bit more for a new one. When you're spending hard earned cash on a lens, you should feel comfort that you could get a quality one or be reassured with a return policy.

If you can ge the lens for a good price, bearing in mind the cost of repair, it might be worth considering - I don't know if water damage is an automatic write-off - i think salt water would be - but I don't see what the lens couldn#'t be repaired.

Maybe you can talk the guy down given the unkown variables?

then again, it probably isn't worth the trouble - it's not as if it's a 16-35 II after all.

Here is a thread about the rescue of a trashed lens, the buyer, Col_M did quite ell out of it in the ned, though it was a bit of a gamble!

After my bag was dunked, I sold off the 2 bodies, and a couple lenses that were destroyed. I had received payment from my insurance, so I just let them go cheap. I think I sold the whole works for around $250-350.

Yeah, even at that price I wouldn't feel bad about passing on it. Now maybe for $50.00.... :p
