Batch save embedded jpeg's?

Is there a way to batch save the embedded jpegs from RAW files. I can do them 1 at a time with FastStone but I can't get it to do a whole folder at once. When I searched on this it was mentioned that Zoom Browser could do this but I haven't figured out to get it to do it yet. I have Zoom Browser and DPP installed.

Because the embedded jpg is a good size for screen viewing and saving the one that already exists is a lot faster than creating one from the RAW. The usefulness of it is limited, but could be very handy in certain situations.

I've just processed a dozen 40D raw files to 300*200 jpeg in exactly 60 seconds at 7/10 quality on my 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo laptop using DPP. It took Lightroom 57 seconds to process the same 12 files in the same way. I don't know how many photos you have to extract the jpegs from but in the 12 hours since you first posted and then replied you could have processed 8,640 files on a laptop like mine. I suspect on my 2.4 Ghz quad core PC I could get a good few more out in the same time interval.

Is there really a problem with running conversions from your original files and generating high quality images with all your edits included, rather than struggling to extract embedded jpeg files, which won't have those adjustments included?

Just select your batch, set the ball rolling and go and make a cup of tea (or go to bed if you seriously have loads to do).

I'm not interested in debating why I shouldn't do this. I just want to know how to do it. I know BreezeBrowser will do this in a few clicks. I don't currently have BreezeBrowser though and was hoping I could do it with what I have.

You can do it this way:
Download IrfanView (very nice free image viewer) and install
Also download and install all the plugins (one of them is a RAW viewer)
Open IrfanView and go to File: Batch conversions/rename
Select CR2 files and add
Pick a jpg setting
Batch convert!

This is not a conversion of the RAW, but a resaving of the jpg that IrfanView would use to view the file (by default). This file is smaller resolution than the original RAW. You can make IrfanView convert RAW but it takes forever.

The only problem with this is that the embedded jpg may actually be saved twice which could lead to some degradation depending on the jpg setting you have. There may be a better way to do this - not sure.

Thanks but what I'm trying to do is just save the jpg, not run a conversion. Faststone does this perfectly for 1 file at a time. You just click file > save as > and it extracts the jpg. I just wanted to do that in a batch instead of 1 at a time.

I should have been more clear, IrfanView just saves the jpg and does not convert from RAW.

Download EOS Viewer Utility. With the older cameras like the 10D, EVU can extract the JPEG file that's attached to the RAW file if you choose to do that or convert the RAW to a JPEG if you choose that option (two different things but capable of the same result). The size of it depends on what you have it set to in the custom functions. For the newer cameras, JPEGs aren't really embedded for extraction but you can convert & save a JPEG that looks like it would SOOC. It won't be the tiny preview thumbnail though...it'd be full rez.

Bruce, I'm a bit confused - why are these jpegs so hard for you to access? What kind of camera do you have? With my wife's 5D, they are just saved along with the Raws on the card. I just select them all and move them into a new folder...

For some reason he's reluctant, or refusing, to shoot RAW+JPEG. He only wants to shoot RAW and pull a SOOC JPEG from that.

Oh. When he referred to "embedded" jpegs, I just assumed it was a similar situation to ours.

This is not something I would use that often, just wanted it as part of the toolkit.

Oh, and RAW+JPEG on the XT embeds a full size JPEG in the RAW file. That's not really what I want.

Thanks, I'll check it out. I used that program a long time ago but switched to something else. I don't remember why I switched but I'll see what I can do with it.

Well in that light, you're making it harder than it should be. A conversion and an extraction aren't very different, time-wise. Canon stopped including a embedded & extractable JPEG I believe at the same time as they implemented the CR2 extension (probably because in reality it doesn't save much, if any, time over simply converting the RAW file with a good RAW software). If you want an SOOC JPEG from a RAW file, you'll simply have to do it Canon's way...conversion with camera parameters applied. Whether that's in ZB, DPP, EVU, etc is up to you. But the time you spend fighting it could be better spent doing it.

If you really need immediacy, shoot RAW+JPEG.
