OK I just got another 50 1.4 (missed the old one too much so I re-bought it) it came UPS today and the box was open (not a problem there is no damage to the box, but I took the lens out and turned it to take the caps off to check it out and everything inside the lens sort of shifted and rattled. Not like a baby rattle, but more of a shifty rattle. My old lens never had anything like this and even my real cheap lenses don't do this. So I'll ask the age old question, should I return/excahnge it? And no I havn't taken any shots with it yet, the camera is at home. I just don't want to spend this kind of money on something that may not work this time next year.

My 50 f/1.4 has done this from day one. If you hold the front element (the ring that focuses with the front element) and shake it, it won't rattle.

I've never shaken any of my lenses, but I don't have any kind of rattle during normal handling of my 50 or any other lens.

mine doesnt rattle either. i would send it back. for the 300ish dollars people pay for this lens, you would expect a little bit better build quality out of it that the 1.8 version.

personally i would send it back. and see if they will replace it.

The focus rings might have some SLIGHT play. If it's fine optically and it is in fact the focus ring don't worry about it.

It rattles with me holding everything (the focus ring) and I'm not shaking it, I'm only turning it to get the caps off and it feels like stuff is moving. I guess it's going back and getting exchanged, it's too much money to feel and act like the 1.8. It's just B&H so I don't think they'll have a problem exchanging it.

Mine doesn't rattle but I definitely feel something slightly shift inside if I move it hard enough. It's been like this ever since I've had it. I'm not worried.

Mine doesn't rattle, it just can't produce sharp images until f/2. Is it supposed to rattle to get sharp images?

really? Are they a lot of them somewhat made like that then? It's not a rattle but a movement like something is loose, but not rattling all over. But I don't have to move it hard for it to happen.

If yours rattles without much movement, then yes, something is wrong. Mine doesn't 'rattle' per se...it's just you can hear the front element shift if you shake it.
