And what shall I learn about pack and heads then?
That the Ranger/Quadra idea you have is only self contained if you have one pack per head? And by having one pack per head you now weigh the same as a mono. Not any more portable then.

That each pack comes with a lack individual adjustment if using more than one head?

That the price point I already mentioned gets blown out of the water compared to mono's?

Here in Canada a Quadra RX set (1 head, 1 pack) is $1700. For that I can get a couple of mono's and a battery pack and have all the adjustment I want.

It really depends on what you need for the shooter who needs a light weight portable lighting solution the quadra is really neat, it is like the Quantum hot shoe strobes they are madly expensive but great for those who want more power than hot shoe strobes but with the same size form factor.

You can get monolights if you want to however other people put different priorities to what gear they need.

In the end it is about agreeing to disagree in a civilized way.

And you've hit the nail on the head, my impression of the post was "what are the pros and cons". I guess disliking one over the other for your needs means "you have alot to learn". :p

No, not understanding that not all pack/heads are the same means that.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

FWIW, I used to shoot with mono's + Innovatronix Explorer XT SE.
Since switching to Portable pack & head I would never go back to a mono + powerpack.

They just are designed/built to be used outdoors. Sure they cost more but you get what you pay for with location designed lighting.

I always see people complain about the weight... grow some balls and carry it... or get an assistant like me :p

Cheers

One thing to consider. If you have a pack, and it fouls up, you're done for the day. If you have mono lights, if one goes bad, you can still shoot with the others. (If you have more than one). Unlikely but stuff does happen. Just another angle.

Dave......

I should agree with this.. .. I shoot with Monolights, elinchrom BXri 250, and had no problems with it ever.. . outdoors I use it with Tronix Explorer Mini. smooth combination i must say.
