I'm looking to get a IS L lens, and I'm curious about the 100 - 400 f/4-5.6 IS L but non of my local camera shops even carry the 70 - 200 f/2.8 IS let alone the 100 - 400. I know I'd be happy with the 70 - 200 for what it is, but now I'm wondering if I would be better off with the extra reach of the 100 - 400 even sacrificing the DoF and 2 stops.

I'd really like to get my hands on a 100 - 400 to try out before making my decision, does anyone know anywhere in the bay area where I could rent one for a day, or better yet the weekend?

Canon 1D Mark III | Canon 20D | Canon EOS 3
70 - 200 f/2.8 IS L | 24 - 70 f/2.8 L | 300 f4 IS L | 50 f/1.8 MkII
1.4x II | Speedlight 550EX

You might check with Keeble & Schuchatt in Palo Alto. If they don't rent them, they can probably steer you to someone who does.

(I'm assuming you're talking about the San Francisco Bay Area).

I'm not short. I'm concentrated awesome!

Check out Adolf Gasser in San Fran. I know my friend has rented Mamya stuff there and I recall seeing a pricelist for Canon L lesns. If I didnt spell the name right just search Yahoo yellow pages for photography and I am sure you will see something that resembles Adolf Gasser.

Keeble & Shuchat rents the 100-400 for $30/day. You can find a PDF listing their rentals at this page. (external link)

I rented from Calumet in San Francisco last week. Picked up the lens on Friday and returned it Monday. Total of $25.00 (it was a 70-200 by the way)

I am currently renting a 70-200 f/2.8 IS from rentcameragear.com. Kevin is excellent to work with, and I am paying less for a two week rental than I would have paid for a 3 day rental at the local store.
