bought my 1st dslr, 40d... to get some macro shots and to do some shooting generally (my stepfather lives on high floor and has beautiful views...)

today it started giving me err99's, i googled, checked here and seems like it's a generic canon eror that can be anything from lens to flash to internal issue

sending it for a refund and once that's refund. i dunno what i be getting next...

40d again from different AD? go for used, time tested 30d? or get cheaper xti?
my 1st dslr and such issues, sigh...

kinda bummed out right now, even dog seems to understand as he is not trying to play with me but is lying down with his nose to the ground :(

something like this happened to you?

Has yet to happen to me, but I've had the same feeling with other stuff...
I say the 40D is an excellent camera (which is on my 'to-buy' list.) I say exchange the 40D for another one. Not exactly an intro camera but it'll hold you off from upgrading in the future. Unless you want to use that refund money on an XT or XTi and new lens then that's a fine choice aswell...
Just don't expect to upgrade to the 40D again because in the long run, you just wasted money.
P.S. I've read so many threads here and I rarely come across any thread pointed out that someone's Canon is defective. You just lucked out. But generally Canons are very reliable.

That happened to me on the second shot I took. Took it back, straight exchange, no problems with the new one. It is an amazing camera...but what do I know, it's my first one too!

I upgraded from my point and shoot Canon Powershot sd750 to the Rebel XT this Christmas and the transition was very smooth because I read the manual inside out and looked thoroughly about my new camera. Until about 1-2 weeks after playing with it constantly, everything seemed to become second nature.
As for the 40D being "too much" of a camera, it all depends on you. The XTI and XT are considered "entry-level" dslrs because they are somewhat easy to use; as the 40D is a "semi-pro" camera. But in reality, all of them share nearly the same amount of attributes.
I say you had your hands on a very nice toy, give it another try and soon enough you'll praise yourself for keeping it. :D

It's not big deal unless it keeps doing it. Just think of it like any other computer.......they do weird things once in a while that normally a restart takes care of. Same deal with cameras......pop the battery out and put it back in. All should be well after that.......unless it continues. Also other brands of lenses & battery's can also cause that.

Circuit City will exchange cameras with no problem... Since they are probably close-by, I'd try another, you'd be foolish not to even try... 40D is an awesome camera...

"Hello, this is your captain speaking. Our flight control computers have failed, so we need to reboot them. While that is happening, we will lose power and all control, so the airplane will be in a steep uncontrolled spinning dive for the next two minutes. Please fasten your seat belts and have a nice day."

"Mercedes Service Bulletin #429371: When the CD is ejected at speeds of over 120 Km/h, the steering wheel may suddenly lock in a hard left turn. Should this occur, simply come to a gentle halt (avoiding obstacles and oncoming traffic), turn off the ignition, and remove the battery. Upon reconnection, the car will reboot and should operate properly."

Sorry, but I get SO tired of my industry using the "Hey, everybody else's river is polluted too" excuse. Modern airplanes and cars do have some problems (sadly), but there is really no excuse for shipping software as crappy as the recent 40D and 1DMKIII releases. Canon has a huge software reliability problem (not to mention a QA problem, which is different) and they need to fix it (both).

Disclaimer: the stuff I write and distribute has bugs too. OTOH, nobody pays me for it.

Geoff
All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

Only time I got er99 on my 30D was when I attached a Canon TC to it, with a digiscope adapter in front of that. Just a temporary thing though.

And I totally agree with Geoff. For the price paid for these cameras and lenses, there should be no recalls, defects or other boogered crap going out the factory door for sale. Nothing.

That's cause they have already built in imperfection in their mission statement. Has a single CEO yet said, "NO boogered crap leaves this factory! Ever!"? No.... They aren't even trying, cause they have us trained to accept the occasional lemon and it puts more money in their pockets. ;)
