Sometimes I just over think things, this may be one of them.

Currently I have a 20D and 30D. I mostly shoot wildlife, birds mostly, and I will have much more time for racing this year. Racing and sports is what I really want to shoot. I feel I have some decent glass for this, a 100-400 and a 120-300 will be here this week. The conundrum is the age old question about a 1 series body.

Would you keep what I have now, save a few more dollars and get a little better then get a 1 series?

Would you get rid of the 20D and get a good 1D or shell out some cash + the 20D and get a MkII?

Sell both the 20 and 30D and get a MkII or MKIIn?

I trying to put together some equipment so this year I can start working on putting together a portfolio for possible business next year. The biggest thing is that I don't want to spend a ton up front to find out I will have very little to know return at all.

Hopefully some of this gibberish made some sense.:D

Birding is one of my main things too....although not as a business.

My take on birding is that the glass is the most important part of the issue.

I do have a 1DIIn that I use for birding as well as the 100-400, 70-200 and a 1.4 T.C.

The 8+ frames a second is nice on the 1D for capturing those unique shots. However, if I remember correctly the 30D fires at about 5 fps.

I think I could do just fine with a 30D birding. However, if I had to have just one camera(I've got the 5D as well), it would have to be the 1DIIn.

All that aside, I would buy the glass I wanted first. Then I would worry about upgrading to a different body.

Perhaps you have all the glass you need/want for your venture?

Good luck.

:)

Well............I always want more glass. :D

The birding and wildlife is more the type of stuff that I like to shoot when the wife and I are out shooting.

A 1D body would be good, because then if you added a 1.4x teleconverter to your 100-400 it would still retain AF at f/8 on the long end.

Racing and sports - Would you keep what I have now, save a few more dollars and get a little better then get a 1 series?

With the 20 and 30D, you have good cams & a backup. Racing, nature and sports aren't always in good light, so I'm wondering when you plan to get some long, fast primes?

When I can afford $5K +. I bought a Sigma 120-300 2.8 so that is not exactly slow, but it could be a little longer.

I gotta go against this one. I'd rather have a 30d w/ the 100-400 naked, than a 1d w/ a 1.4x just to get the same reach. You'd actually have less total reach since the 1d is only 6mp(right?). The 1d wouldn't make up for the loss in IQ with the 1.4x, or the fact the AF would be slow. JMHO.

If wildlife/birding is your thing, I'd stick with the 30d and save for a 500 f/4. I think it would do more for you than a new body.
