I was going to get the canon speedlite 430 ex but have been into shops looking and the Sigma 500 DG Super is half the price of the canon. I don't really know much about flashes so are these simular? Or is one better than the other?

Where do you live?
In the US, the 430EX is about the same price as the current Sigma model, the EF-530 DG Super.

The 500 is discontinued so maybe you're getting a clearance price? If it comes with full warranty at half the price of a 430EX, it's a pretty good deal.

Is this the 500 DG Super, or possibly the 500 DG ST.

Being the 500 DG ST would make this more in line with the prevailing prices.

Enjoy! Lon

I have both these flashes, both are great! Still you can trigger Sigma with on-board flash, which gives you more creativity, and space to imagine, but Canon is still a Canon!
So my advice - go for Sigma, then build up some money and get 430, or vice versa, that's up to you! Good luck!
