I just got this lens hours ago, I decided to take a stroll down by the Lake to get the obligatory duck shots, stumbled on this Bird(Hawk?). I am very new to photography, so any critique or PP will be appreciated:D

These are straight from the camera. I did not shoot RAW either.

One thing I noticed is that I was struggling trying to capture a good image against the blue sky, it kept washing out the bird. Any tips as for as adjusting my settings to correct this?

Lucky you - it's a hawk but I not qualified to say what kind. Eating one of it's own species - nice. Color and focus good - background a little distracting but hey you just got the lens.

...and it is a spectacular lens, almost as sharp as my primes.

thank you.
Unfortunatly this was the only angle I could take the pic. She had a lake behind her, a Family picnicking in front of her, and a bunch of trees on her left. She does kinda get lost in the trees, but i am happy with the results.

oh, BTW I meant to post this in the birds section, but must of hit the wrong section(I have a finicky touchpad on the laptop)

nice shots.
if youre shooting @ 1/1600, you could even increase the ss and lower the iso or stop down a stop. but a great start!

Nicely done, Roland!! I'd say the shots need slightly better exposure (they might be a touch over exposed) but other than that, they are good to go!

Congrats on that new lens you got! It'll serve you well!!! (And will soon make you long for the 70-200 f/2.8L ;). Trust me on that! )

Thanx to everybody with your kind comments!

To those who say its a tad "overexposed" I do see what your saying, but how to I adjust my camera to compensate. Is it as easy as turning the exposure down or is it something else?

if youre shooting in manual mode (which i'd hope with that equipment), you could change the iso to 100, or you could stop down to f/6.3 or so. or even increase the shutter speed to 1/2000, but i'd start by lowering the ISO first.

Great capture! This is better than the duck shot you went looking for. I tried to correct the exposure a little.

Wow thats beautiful, they are such amazing birds. Your lucky you came across him. How far were you for him to not get startled and fly off?
This was hand held? What about if the subject was flying or moving real fast, do you think you could achieve the same with sharpness, I believed you desired?
Also could we see a 100% Crop of his face.
Sorry if it sounds like I"m interrogating you, I'm just really trying to figure out what lens to purchase. I just got your response on the other board.
