My gf makes and sells silver jewellery... in the past she's had her photos taken by a professional outfix (she sends product off, they photograph at their premises, and send through good quality images and of course return her items!).
This is reasonably expensive, but the image quality has been very good, and she's happy with what she gets - however, when she launches a variation (or a new product entirely) she has to go through the whole rigmarole again - and when she hasn't yet ascertained demand for the product, it can be expensive to photograph it only to find it doesn't sell...
So, I'm interested in seeing if I can take some shots myself.
I have:
400D
50mm f1.4
100m f2.8 Macro
17-55 (kit lens)
70-200mm F4L (on its way)
I also have a 430EX and a decent (I guess!) Manfrotto tripod.
Presumably I need to ensure that the pieces are adequately lit... so that's my first question... what's the easiest way to get decent lighting on 'product' photography.
Any tips for getting good results?
Suggestions for backgrounds to shoot on? Her current shots have a completely washed white background, which looks good on the website - for example:
![]() | HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/gif' | Redirected to error image by FLICKR |
As you can see, detail is quite important to show up - so should I be opting for my 100mm f2.8 Macro?
Would appreciate hearing some techniques (and maybe settings) to try... I know trial and error is always a good option, but as a newbie to this, some pointers towards the right direction are always appreciated...
