OK, looks like it is a separate insurance. Personal Items Insurance.
I will definitely get this sooner rather than later. I've got around $10k worth of gear sitting around at home.

Do you guys also insure other stuff like TV, Watches, musical instruments, etc?

That should all fall under you homeowners or renters insurance...

I hope your Insurance companies are more caring than some of ours here in the UK.

Coincidently, I was watching a TV documentary the other evening about insurance claims and scams.
Upon a phone call from a customer, they immediately drew the conclusion that the claim may be false because of the post code (zip) the customer lived in.

The victim of this burglary, provided empty boxes the equipment came in (TV's DVDs stereo etc etc etc) along with receipts.
The man is still waiting for his claim to be settled after 13 months.

It prompted me to contact my insurance company, I wanted an agent to verify my belongings, particularly my camera equipment.
They don't have agents that do that.

I then asked if they would log all the serial numbers of my equipment if I sent them on.
They don't do that.

I mentioned the documentary I was watching and said I take every precaution, I have an alarm, I have additional locks on doors and windows, but in the event of a burglary, how would I prove what I am claiming.
Just provide the receipts, the lady said

I said I keep my receipts in a case along with other documentation, passports, birth / marriage certificates etc, what if they stole the case as well.

Well we would just have to take your word for it, she said.

Yeah right........

I went to my state farm agent and she had to go to the adjuster about the coverage. I was told it was NOT covered if it was dropped!!! I have heard some adjuster will tell you want you wanter to hear just to get a policy with you. I would make sure that you read the fine print in your policy! JMO for what ever it's worth. I would had to see something happen and you thought you were covered, all to find out your not.

I'll have to read the fine print but I do business with this agent most everyday(automotive glass) and I wouldn't think she would lie.... Have to check again.

Yeah...hmmm...A seperate policy....I have it under my homeowners but just a seperate rider, although it does cover everything as you said....except my guy said "run over by a bus in Shanghai" rather than the flying ducks statement. And in the fineprint it doesn't mention ducks or busses but does mention accidental damage

I have paid a lot extra on my house contents insurance to be bullet proof, including camera equipment out of the house up to a certain amount.

The fact they are not interested in logging what I have plus serial numbers, just says to me its a great get out if ever I may need to rely on them.

I think I'm going to be looking elsewhere.
