Yeah, camera insurance is a no brainer. I pay about $70 a year for nearly $6,000 in coverage, zero deductible. Why everyone doesn't have it I will never know.

For one I think most people don't really think about it.... and if they do, they figure its gonna be pretty expensive. I was sure it would be at least $20-30 a month which would still not be bad considering how much you could lose at one time due to theft.

I have coverage for all of my gear too (different company than State Farm). $50 a year for $5,000 in coverage. Zero deductible and covers pretty much everything. The only catch is I have to give them serial numbers for each item. Not a big deal, but it does require a phone call/update when I buy or sell gear.

Insurance this cheap is too good of a deal to pass up...

see what happens tho if you make the mistake of saying you made even TEN CENTS off a picture with your camera..............
last year my whole bag got stolen and because i had homeowners insurance and made the mistake of saying in passing that i had sold a picture of a kid to a friend of the family the ugly word "BUSINESS" destroyed me and i got a grand total of $250 for my entire bag with 2 bodies and 4 lenses so be very careful if you ever have to file a claim.
if you DO get coverage for business it will be sky high
just a heads up-

My best quote for about £10000 ($18500) worth is £250 a year (about $450) which ain't bad. I'm still on my house contents insurance at about £500 a year, so I'll have to compare cover and think about changing.

I also have a policy with State Farm. I insured my equipment when I bought it so I was able to furnish receipts for everything including memory cards and rocket blower. They did ask if it was for work but that meant using the camera to make money and I think that might be a different policy. I use mine for work but to record progress and problems on construction projects so to State Farm that is just a personal articles policy. I don't know if there is a difference in policy price but I assume so.

For those that use Quicken for thier finances, one thing you can do to make all your insurance claims and issues easier is to bye Quicken Home Inventory Manager. Of course taking inventory of your entire home takes time initially, but once you have the majority of it done, keeping up with it is very easy and time friendly. It's what I use, and I know to the penny, what everything in my house to worth, and have pictures of everything inside this program.

camera insurance in australia is expensive and hard to find
i found a place that will insure about 7 grand worth of equipment for one year for around $330 bux but with alot of clauses in the terms and conditions...

sounds like camera insurance in the states is alot cheaper

I already started the process of getting a policy set up for my gear (which my spreadsheet tells me is up to nearly $5500 in cost.) Gonna be calling them today to give them the list and get the policy 'live' asap (also State Farm.) The prices they quoted were right on the mark with what others here have been seeing, and the coverage is definitely very good. To me the biggest thing was what the payout would be. Namely, full replacement value vs. depreciated cost, and State Farm fit the bill nicely on this one.

I'll probably still never leave my bag anywhere unattended (ie: locked car, even if it is tucked away and hidden) but it will be nice to have peace of mind that if I DID leave it somewhere and something happened, I'd be covered. Hell, I'm paranoid just leaving it on my desk at work even though it's the IT office, and only three people including myself have a code or key that can get into the room. =)

Update: On a fun note, I just called in to give them all the relevant info, and now they say they need copies of the receipts, for me to bring all the gear to their office so they can take pics of it, and that they're open, for my convenience of course, from 9am to 5pm. Great.

Really. I just called my State Farm rep and she said all they need is a list and the value. Does SF differ from state to state? I wouldn't think so. She quoted me a cost of $14.80 per $1000 per year.

That was the original plan they gave me too. Seems a tad strange that they're changing that mid-stride. Cost per $1k on my quote came out to about $20 (original quote was $4500 coverage for $86.40/year, and lets just say my kit has issues with growth prevention, hehe.)

In any case, ill be leaving work early because of this so I can go home, hunt down receipts for 28 items, pack everything up, and haul it over to these Mensa-grads.

I don't know if its because I do business with them or just a small town or Maybe because I had them for my Insurance for A very long time....BUT I just wrote a list of my gear with estimated value to the side (My estimate;)) on a piece of typing paper and she stapled it to the policy. The end! Nothing else to do but give her $40 and tell her have a nice day...

Evil state farm! My family has been with them for three generations now for everything from home to life to auto to renter's insurance. Alas, we've been thru a few different agents in the last few years and that whole 'history' thing seems to become more distant of a memory every day.
