Reeforbust, yeah it does sound illegal but we are dealing with insurance companies. It's also legal for them to discriminate based on age/gender so...

Oh boy, do I know this for a fact. $4K car. 8 years old. 100K miles.
Type? Hyundai Tiburon (2000). Style? Coupe. Age? 19 going on 20 July.
Car payment? $100/mo. Insurance? Full coverage with Progress.
Car is in dad's name. Insured on their policy with me added.

Price I pay (and average quote I've gotten 'on my own'):
$250/mo vs $275-$450/mo[SIZE=2]

Oh and this was DOWN from $315/mo. That happened shortly after my
19th birthday when I got a wonderful non-moving citation.
But to end this off-topic rant... For that price, I need to call a local SF agent ;)

Note: You can edit my photo just tell me how you did it ;)

My insurance when I was 18 (mandatory in UK) on a <1L peugot 105 that was about 15 years old was over £2000, or about $4000 at the time.

The car was only worth about £400/$800

EXACTLY.

And god forbid you come to collect one day after paying out-the-ass for years.

I still need to call my agent and inquire about the depreciation issue... I want to know that they are going to pay me in full for the lost or damaged items no matter how long I have had them insured should I ever need to make a claim.

do you guys earn money using this equipment and is it part of a business?

It seems like when I asked three different agents about this type of policy they all tried to get me to sign up for homeowners/renters policies as well as a business policy. they asked a ton of questions and some agents never got back to me. I finally got a quote for $180/yr for $10k coverage with a $1k deductible. That's not a deal.

I'll have to recheck into this but maybe its because I live in NJ....we get the short end of the stick all the time.

I gotta get this soon as I just made some big purchases.

thanks

I told my insurance agent from State Farm that I sometimes to make money off of my photography equipment and she said thats fine but I would have to do a business plan. It was very little more than the personal plan so I was okay with it. I think mine was about $300 for $15k worth of coverage. You should check out State Farm if you havent already.

^ I've been talking to my SF agent also. What I got was, "The rate for computers is $2.20 per $100. For example, a $2,000 computer would cost $44.00 for the year. The rate for photography equipment is $1.20 per $100. So, a $2,000 piece of equipment would cost $24.00 for the year."

I recently insured about $4,200 worth of gear for $55 through State Farm. Excellent deal.

My insurance is through Liberty Mutual (LM). When I inquired about insuring my computer and photography equipment, LM said that there is not necessary because it covered under my homeowner's policy.

Question: is there any downside to having my gear covered under my homeowner's policy? Also as a side note I'm just a hobbyist.

The stuff might not be covered if it's not in your house, like say, travelling in Europe.

But I'm not 100% sure and they're all a little different.
