If you were going to be fighting against some serious wind, what would you do for stability?

Think about it like this: you're in Antarctica, where the average wind speed is 30 MPH, shooting for over a month.

Weight the center, extend legs as wide as possible. Stand in front if the wind and shoot with a remote after composing and metering.

Or buy a better tripod.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Spike feet so that the tripod doesn't slide across the ice. And tripod with legs that spread out low to the ground, to resist the wind. And weight.

Yep, Id combine all that has been said so far:

Spiked feet
Nice strong tripod with the legs out wide
Weight from the center column
Dont extend the center column more than half way up
Use a remote trigger

Might also grab the tripod during the shot, to dampen wind-induced vibrations!

Funny Ed

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I guess I wasn't very clear in my original question - how about some tripod recommendations and/or accessories?

Sand Bag will help keep the legs on the ground if you have access to them and getting them to the location isn't to difficult.

I wonder if the IS stablizers would even spin up in those temperatures, especially after being in the humid warmth of Quonet huts and sleeping bodies all night!

We use sand bags routinly in TV production they hold down 12x12 silks from blowing away I think they can stabalize a tripod well enough. You can fill them with anything heavy thats available....Ice may work...

Are you actually going to antarctica or was that just an example.

Best accessory - weight, on the ground. Don't let it hang, it'll start to swing in the wind. Tripod, any that you can still carry

shooting club VB and club soccer, hoping to get back to landscape work soon.

Maybe pack some tent pegs and some rope?

Make sure the tripod is on a stable surface, for instance if your on snow make sure you pack down the spots the tripod contacts the snow....
