Hi,

I have a question for you 5D owners. I am buying a 5D in March (as soon as my 2007 bonus hits the bank) :)

My question is this: given my current lens line up should I get the 24-105MM f/4 EF IS as well? I am getting the 17-40MM f/4 EF L as the UWA for the 5D (AMEX Rewards points...free to me) and I have a 24-70MM EF L for the 5D main lens.

It just seems to me that 24-105MM is redundant to what I already have. On the "up" side if you get it bundled with the 5D it saves about $500 over the stand alond price. I have read that the 24-105MM f/4 makes a fine street lens.

I shoot grandkids, group events, pro bono weddings, and landscapes.

So, fellow 5D POTNers...what say you?

I'm too lazy right now to go look but I think the 24-105 is lighter than the 24-70. On days where you have plenty of light it might be nice to have the lighter lens. From what I have heard you can always sell it and still come out ahead.

OTOH, $500 in your pocket is a lot of money.

Worth it IMO. If you find that you don't really want or use it, just sell it for a small profit :)

Thanks for the input guys for confirming my logic. I am thinking the same way. I just did a price check at B+H and the actual savings on the 24-105MM f/4 EF L is $410.00. I could offer it for 1/2 of that savings on the Market Place Forum and sell the lens quickly I suspect. On the other hand...I will in all likelihood find it a useful and sharp focal range and just keep it :)

My dad bought the 5D kit like you mentioned and I've used the combo. I really like the 24-105 although a close friend and fellow POTN'er doesn't like the bokeh of the 24-105. I think it's a great lens and you already have a great, fast lens that covers much of the focal range so if you don't like it, you'll be able to get a good sum of money for it on here or FM. I think you'll like it anyway.

I LOVE this lens on the 5D, great all around lens. Sold my 24-70 for it about 6 months ago and haven't looked back. :) It's great for what I shoot.

I know I'm not a 5D owner (wish I was), but I would get the kit. You can always sell it for more money later and see what you think. Who knows? Maybe it will work better for your style shooting than the 24-70L. Might as well give it a try. ;)

I had the 24-105 Is l with my 5d and found it an almost ideal walkaround combo. Much nicer than the heavy/oversized 24-70 in my hands and excellent IQ in all respects. i suppose it is a personal thing. I'd buy the kit and sell whichever I didn't use any more. I prefer primes for low light anyway so the 2.8 or 4.0 argument is not that relevant to me on walkies.

For me the 24-70 became redundant. General walkaround, low-ish light static objects - the 24-105 is superb - sharp & more reach than the 24-70. Low light I use- 35L. I carry them both as a perfect compliment!

Jim,

I was in your boat a few months ago when I was deciding on my 5D... I ended up getting the 24-105 lens with it... I always knew I could turn around and sell it if the need be... Despite the similar focal lengths, I feel they are distinctly different lenses for different purposes... After using both of them, my 24-105 is my casual walk around lens... When I go into low-light, my 105 gets booted and the 24-70 takes over (unless I need reach or can use my 85L)... Also, if you're like me you probably don't wanna switch lenses too much if you thought about fully going the "prime route" in lieu of the 24-70... If money really is a crunch, IMHO, I would keep the 24-70 and pass on the 105 in a heartbeat... Its sharper than my 105 and has noticeably superior color/contrast... Though thats not to say the 105 is no slouch either!! If you can though, get both!!!

If I had a 5D I would absolutely get the 24-105.

But if you don't want it, I'll up Ed's offer. :)
