Today was my first real outing with my news lens which I bought beginning of january but weather and light has been poor combined with me being busy with work. So today the light was the best since I got the lens (but still light could be much better). I had to bump ISO quite high. Most shooting was done at ISO 2000 or higher.

I think the 400 f/5.6 is difficult to hold steady so I think I don't get the top sharpness that this lens can deliver because I simply can't hold it steady enough. Oh well maybe Canon will update this lens one day with IS.

Ok now for some photos.

First we have an African Crowned Crane

Heron in flight

Gull in flight with dinner (these are definately seen better but this was my first time catching a bird in flight with dinner)

All nice shots Tommy. I especially like the water spray in the gull shots. I assume by your comments you had a few that were not keepers. What about trying a monopod?

Hehe I have lots of non-keepers. I do have a monopod I just did not bring it today. For birds in flight I think a monopod is just in the way but for other shots it will be the way to go definately.

Very nice shots Tommy. I had to use a tripod with mine.

Oh well maybe Canon will update this lens one day with IS.

Bite your tongue. It's the only one left they haven't ruined with IS. Now if they would make a 300 non-IS again, so we had a choice, I'd give in. :)

Nice shots with the new lens, I prefer the first. The gull sure has a good catch.

I wouldnt worry about the sharpness,if you had the time you could count the hair on the cranes head! :D The whites are hot but for me it works well for the gull exploding out of the water. With a little practice you will be panning that 400 for BIF with no problems, just remember to set the focus limiting switch to 8.5 to infinity to get the fastest focus for the inflights, use AI servo and I also use the custom function that sets the * button for focus. hold the * button down , keep the center focus point on the subject and hold down the shutter button and hang on, this lens will make you happy!
