Just wondering how the G9 IQ compares, no I know it's not going to be the same but is it very/slightly/not really dissapointing in comparison if you also have a5D???

the G9 really is noisy above 200 iso. So because owners of 5D's (I used to own one) are used to an exceptionally clean photo, you might be really disappointed. The g9 is great for a p&s. Has good colors and I use it a lot when I've got long lenses on my dslr's...but it's not great using higher iso's...

The thing is, they just really aren't comparable. If you are looking for a nice P&S to use (not in low light, but there is not any P&S that I'd say has good high iso IQ) for walk around when you don't want to use your dslr, I'd highly recommend it.

Thanks _ I hear what you'resaying about the high ISO, but no I was jjust thinking for walking round where a DSLR would be a bit obtrusive

Can you conjure decent bokeh at the long end or is that too wishful thinking. Nothing outrageous like the 85L etc, I don't men that , but just enough to isolate from the background wide open(ish)?

you can if you use the macro mode improperly :)

It can make nice bokeh but you have to be somewhat close to your subject to do it.

I tested that here:

HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

but found out that you can use it in real world situations to create bokeh, this was outside at a train exhibition:

In most conditions you won't get much more blur than this (without using Photoshop to simulate it)

F4.8
44.4mm (max Zoom)

An SLR and a fast lens is the only thing that will get you what you want..

I think that for what they are, the G7 and G9 are pretty amazing. If I'm outside in daylight I'll likely shoot at 80-100 ISO and get really nice results and I do have a 5D but for what the G9 that I have is, I'm very happy and much more likely to carry it all the time. I also am starting to enjoy shooting it in the "W" setting which is JPEG Wide format @ I think 4000x2250, on my computer screen it looks great and is really fun to shoot in that format.

Is there any difference between shooting in that mode and just cropping later?

No and Yes, cropping would give you the same size image and you'd get to process in RAW, big difference, but what I've noticed is that by having it in Wide, I think I see differently and that's a fun and usually gratifying challenge.

G9 and 5D, which I own, has obvious differences in output and performance. Not sure why you are comparing two different cameras like that. I will say that the G9 output stands on its own. But when you look at 5D output, it pales in comparison. It's like listening to music. One sound system sound nice, but then you go into another room that has a much better sound system and you suddenly notice the differences.

Im not trying to directl;y compare the different cameras , just wondering how many 5D users enjoy the G9 wiythout feeling the IQ is a let down
very subjective I know;)

I have both but with a good reason, my G9 will be for underwater use. There is very little chance I would prefer the images from the G9 over any of the DSLR bodies & lenses I have owned. I could have before getting my 20D when they came out, but not now.

I have a G9 and a 1D mk II. I bought the G9 for times when carrying or using the 1D mk II would not be possible or practical. Therefore comparing the IQ is almost irrelevant, as I wouldn't have got the shot in the first place if I wasn't using the G9. For me, they are different cameras with different applications.

For what it's worth, I think the quality of the G9 is very, very good. It is not up to DSLR qualities, but really is very impressive. So far I've only tested it up to ISO400, but have been happy with the results I've obtained. A small amount of NR at ISO400 really improves and cleans up the image without too much fine detail loss.

Simon.

I think if you get people using 5Ds, 1-series cameras, etc. getting a G9, that speaks favorably for that point and shoot.

Thanks for th imputt everyone, and yes obviously the IQ won't be up to DSLR IQ, I never presumed so, but wanted to be sure that those that knew their cameras (i.e. 5D and 1D usrs) rated it as good for what it is:D

That is good enough for me - thanks:lol:
