That is probably my only wish at the moment in terms of equipment. Just hope in the future I will be able to afford better build quality. That goes from a new body and a better 50mm F1.4... Thats pretty much it. My dad has always told me that build quality and weight is important in gear because it's about the feeling of it and it helps to steady your shots.

On the flip side, its $800ish sitting there being used very little and the 450D is coming out in the next month or two meaning the 400d will instantly lose a few hundy in resale value.

Does it stay or does it go :| ¿?

Sell it now otherwise you may as well keep as a backup

I just applied for a job at frogprints. Ive decided to try and look for a job that is close to photography. Since I enjoy it.

They are wanting to hire a printer person. I submitted my CV and even called him. Had a chat and told him I absolutely love photography. And everything like that. I told him to look out for my cv :)

Don't over-do it, it'll shy them away.
Leave the rest to them now, Matt :)

I do admire your determination, so best of luck :D

Sell the 400D and buy a fast prime. e.g. Sigma 30mm F1.4 or upgrade your Canon 50mm F1.8 to a better build and slightly faster F1.4... :)

No, the money would be to pay off 1/2 the 40D as it put on the CC :)

Don't need any more glass for a while, plus I'd be murdered... have the wedding and honeymoon this year, would be good to be able to afford to at least leave the south island LOL

Be very carefull ... once you do a hobby for a living the fun quickly gets sucked out of it.

I used to love animation and computer design. I worked in the industry for 7 years and the love certainly faded. Instead of doing the cool things you like, you end up with all this boring corporate work. Instead of animating something cool, I ended up animating a lozenger going down someones throat for a TV commercial etc... which is one reason I am very wary of using photography to earn an income. I am happy to explore the options, but it would be on my terms and never full time.

Really? I would love the idea of waking up and editing photographs all day. Talking about prints. Working with Art... Man that would be awesome. I told my mum about the job just before. She does not support it at all.

Would rather me find a glamorous job.

Thats what I also think... I have had a few paid jobs, but there is alot of pressure on you to get the perfect shot. At this stage I'd rather keep it as a hobby. (and an expensive one at that:rolleyes:)

Its just that someone wrote a comment on my website that really made me think.

artistrybybrianne:
Matt, I think your an extremely creative guy. You look like someone who has studied photography for years. I got a B.A. in photography and I don't think my work is nearly as creative as yours. I'm still growing and learning everyday tho'. Did you ever consider working in photography? You could be a nature photographer and work for magazines, or a freelancer, and do contract jobs. You could sell your (expressionism)to art galleries who would promote your work and get you recognition. I would recommend you look into one of these possibilites. Photography may just become your whole life.

I mean I could start off finding a job that involves photography. Would be nice on my CV. And then if I don't like it ill just head off somewhere else. I suppose this whole time in my job finding ive been looking for stuff that will impress my family and friends. Now im beginning to realize that I have to go for things that will improve... myself. A photography related career would be a dream job for me really.

JOTD: The Bacon Tree
Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert, wandering aimlessly and close to death.
They are close to just lying down and waiting for the inevitable, when all of a sudden.......

"Hey Pepe, do you smell what I smell?
Ees bacon I ahm sure of eet."
"Si, Luis eet smells like bacon to meee".

So, with renewed strength, they struggle up the next sand dune, and there, in the distance, is a tree loaded with bacon.
There's raw bacon, dripping with moisture ..there's fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon...every imaginable kind of cured pig meat.

"Pepe, Pepe, we ees saved!
Eet EES a bacon tree!"
"Luis, are you sure ees not a meerage?;
We ees in the Desert don't forget."
"Pepe when deed you ever hear of a meerage that smeell like bacon...ees no meerage, ees a bacon tree".

And with that ...Luis races toward the tree. He gets to within 5 meters, with Pepe following closely behind, when all of a sudden a machine gun opens up and Luis is cut down in his tracks.

It is clear he is mortally wounded but, true friend that he is, he manages to warn Pepe with his dying breath.

"Pepe...go back man,you was right....ees not a bacon tree."
"Luis Luis, mi amigo...what ees it?
"Pepe...ees not a bacon tree...

Ees..........

Ees...

Ees.........

Ees....

... Eees a Ham Bush"

:p

Well done, I saw that job, go for it, I am sure you will do well there. Dont overdo it as Kirst says, keep cool and good luck ;)

Insurance is going to cover my lens and Progear didnt even laugh, such good blokes those! I had a long chat to David who is there from PixelsToGo (where Aaron works ie Fritz), they are incredibly friendly and helpful. Apparently the IDS MkIII is still very difficult to get, 3 came in and Paul nabbed 1 to replace his 5D. Another customer demanded the other and well not sure what happend to the third. I asked them to keep me one when the next shipment comes in :p

Sancho, valid points but I have been doing design and animation for 10 years now and still love it. Most jobs have crap bits, crap days, even weeks, but generally I do like my job now that Ive gotten used to the clientele. One does have to be wary though with creative areas I think, I like that I do photography part time and get a small income from that to suppliment my salary as a web designer. Just my 2c
