Well, all this was well before my time, but one image that I first saw in grade school was the classic one of the girl standing next to the body at kent State. I believe that particular protest was actually about Nixon invading Cambodia, so this might be close but no cigar in regards to meeting your criteria. Either way, it's a powerful image.

That's a good read, thanks. I'm looking forward to receiving 'I Protest!' now. Were there any other major magazines besides Life/(Time?) which were widely read?

Hey Adam, what do you think of the book?
I understand that there is a debate in the US Military in regards to soldiers in the front line posting blogs, which can contain photographs. :p

Hi Doug, it's excellent thankyou. Exactly the kind of source I needed!

Well my dissertation is coming along ok and I have plenty of primary sources. My deadline is May 15th so I have alot to do before then. One of the biggest problems i've found is finding actual US opinion on photographs during the war and whether they influenced their views.

I am currently compiling a questionnaire to put to people who were alive in America during the Vietnam war. I'm interested in people ranging from a political aware age, i.e. say 17+. I'm looking for students / soldiers / members of the anti-war movement and ordinary citizens from the period to fill it in. Obviously as I live in the UK, finding a pool of people is hard so if anyone here could please fill it in then it would be an absolutely massive help with my dissertation.

I will PM people from this thread too who appear to be US citizens and probably write a new thread asking for help generally.

The questionnaire isn't ready yet but will be within a few days so if you are interested please send me a PM and I can get it emailed to you soon. It won't be long and shouldn't take more than 10 minutes of your time.

Thanks again for all your help,
Adam

I'd just like to say a quick thankyou to everyone that helped out. In the end I was not allowed to use the interviews as it wasn't academic enough but the opinions were still very valuable and helped me gain some ideas and shape the direction of my work. I got 67 in the end (a 2:1 mark over here) so was pretty chuffed with that as it was one of the higher marks :) Also got a 2:1 overall for my degree so happy enough and now just job hunting!

Cheers guys!

Well, save everything, you can use it in your first book.

Glad it worked out for you, I know it had to be a lot of work.

Thanks, it was alot more than I could have expected! Went well in the end and when I read it, I was actually impressed for once! A book... not too sure, probably going to attempt to get into photojournalism now.

Thanks, it was certainly very interesting for me too. I've already been to Vientiane but would definately go back! Really want to travel to the East of the country where access seems a bit harder.

Every successful photojournalist writes a book later in life. ;)

True. I've only ever read Don McCullin's autobiography. Will have to look into finding more. Just need to work out which route to take now. Short term job first though as i'm in desperate need of some cash!

The north east near the Viet/Chinese border is beautiful and rugged especially in Phongsali, Houaphan, Xieng Khoung Provinces..The road system is basic to say the least but in the dry season quite easy to get around..

For a historian like yourself Houaphan and Xieng Khoung has special significance..Some of the heaviest fighting of the Second IndoChinese War took place there..Houaphan was the birth place of the Pathet Lao..
