Hmmm... I just bought a mac and changed my CS2 to CS3 thinking it and Bridge would be my single program solution as Bridge is much better than in Cs2. I have been holding off on Lightroom because I still find the flow to be unintuitive.

Now I guess I need to download the Aperture trial and see if it is worth the admission cost...

Can't wait to see other user comments as well!

Indeed you're right, this version may be worth a trial download. I might give it a go, although it could be annoying after spending cash on LR.

I dont know if it convinces me to buy it. I would have loved to see a performance improvement under the features list. I may have missed it. When I use Aperture, it really takes up a lot of power from my MBP to run it.

Having checked in the manual on the Apple site, it sounds as though Aperture still gives you no choice over colour space when using an external editor. You only chose whether it uses a TIFF or PSD file format, otherwise it will be a 16-bit Adobe RGB image.

This was one of the issues I was waiting to see fixed in Aperture 2. The other being better image adjustment options, not being able to change the blank point was a nonsense. Such an obvious feature to have overlooked.

A shame as I really want to like Aperture, I absolutely love its management and workflow but the image editing side let things down for me. The opposite of LightRoom which has a good 'develop' module, though nothing that makes it better than ACR, but a layout and workflow that I found counter-productive.

If it just gave that extra flexibility when using an external editor, it is such a simple thing that it lets you set for any other export option that I am at a loss as to why they would leave it out here.

Michael.

aperture 2 runs MUCH faster on my mbp than 1.5 ever did. I also like a lot of the new features, and it seems a bit more intuitive to use than before. however, like mij said, the image-editing side of things is still not up to par with lightroom and ACR, but the DAM side is still very well done and much better than in lightroom.

I've been carefully looking at version 2's tutorials and features and specs.
I think it's looking good, and the interface and workflow for me is far better than LR.

I think $99 for the upgrade is great. going to do it!
Also supposedly a very improved color representation and RAW engine,
so all very welcomed changes - the monochrome feature is simple and effective too.

I purchased my copy immediately. I'll wait until it arrives (hopefully Friday) and forego using the "trial" version.

No plugin support (seemingly), but I'm happy with all the other changes. I've never really liked a lot of Lightroom, but did like the targeted adjustments. Aperture seems to have basically done that (in a slightly different way).

Although nothing has been said on the Apple site, I was just reading an article on AUPN which claims it does support editing plugins:

[URLapertureprofessional.com/showthread.php?t11851 wrote:
="[URL=http://apertureprofessional.com/showthread.php?t=11851]AUPN Aperture 2 Overview"]I think it’s important to mention one of the greatest new features of Aperture 2.0, but the one that’s likely (at first) to be overlooked. Apple has added the ability to create editing plug-ins for Aperture, which will, over time, revolutionize the program. Having an edit plug-in interface means that Aperture users will be able to do just about anything to their images. It’ll be possible to create plug-ins that replicate film effects, add borders, allow for selective edits like dodging and burning—the possibilities are pretty endless. For the purist who only wants to focus on Aperture’s image editing tools, there’s no need to ever add a plug-in, but for those who have been hankering to extend the program’s capabilities—your wish has been granted.

Oh for the one small ability to chose the external editor colourspace. I really hope I have overlooked something.

Michael.

Don't hold your breath waiting for Aperture (or any Apple pro app) to be ported to Windows. iTunes and Safari are there to support users of iPods and iPhones.

You want Aperture? Buy a Mac. ;)

Tempting... at least for a second computer. Too many apps I use I need windows for. Kinda why I'd like to hear if Aperture has the color-shift issues that ACR has... or not. This could sway my next computer purchase to be a mac (if even just a mini) esp. if Adobe doesn't get on the ball with with their color profiling, and Vista continues to have its microphone/sound issues.

Interestingly I see that Aperture can sync the library to the ipod touch / iphone... wonder how this works (smaller file size? full library backup? slideshow only?)

You know you can also run Windows (if/ when you must) on a Mac?

They've also improved the brush/repair tool but I did see something about plugins support.
I'll have to investigate.

As with other posters who commented about LR's interface I find it unpleasant to work in.

Just rename the app in your applications folder. I renamed Aperture 1.5 --> Aperture_1. Then install the trial of 2.0 - it will show up as Aperture. Your library from 1.x will remain as is. When you're done with the trial, drag your 1.x library package on top of Aperture_1 to open.
