Bulb without cable release possible?

Hi All,

I've been dying to try some star trail effects with my 400d. Obviously I'll need to use the bulb setting, but as I don't have a cable release yet, is there a way to keep the shutter open *without* my finger clamped to the button?! I read a magazine tutorial which seemed to hint it was possible on a 400d using a timed release, but I'm darned if I can make that work. Any help much appreciated....

Steve

Unfortunately I don't think so. You can get decent shots by leaving your lens cap on, setting camera to bulb, pressing shutter button then taping the shutter button down somehow, remove lens cap, wait for your exposure time to lapse, then re-attach lens cap and undo the tape.

I think you'll find a cable release is a lot easier to use for this kind of thing. In the big scheme of things, they are not that expensive and are useful for many other photographic projects.

Thanks guys - the insane idea of taping it down did occur, but I guess I'll have to aim for a release in the long run!

That's right! I forgot the 400D had a 2.5mm stereo jack for it's cable release. I actually made a similar item for my old camera. Alas, the 30D uses some wierd proprietary Canon connector.

Get a cable, I use mine much more than originally anticipated. When you have the equipment, you find a use for it!
