My good friend with a new Pentax DSLR is chaperoning her 17 year old's drama class trip to London. She will be there for 7 days. Where should she go to shoot on a limited budget and time? And should she bring her tripod? Staying at a hotel, but likes night shooting.

I was there 13 years ago, but didn't have any gear then. So, I only got a few shots. Are there any places in particular that does not allow photography as well, so she won't be surprised?

Thanks for help, in advance. You guys have always been so helpful.

the only place I know for certain that will not allow photographs is the US embassy. I've been told off for that one before. I would imagine you'd get the same around some of the other sensitive embassies like Saudi etc. but they're not exactly the most appealing photospots anyway.

Most of the british government buildings aren't as bothered, probably because they're one of the reasons so many tourists come to london... you could hardly ban people from photographing the houses of parliament or the palace!

Around the river is a great place to shoot, especially if she's into night photogrpahy. The bridges when lit up look pretty cool, and the wheel just lends itself perfectly

the area around canary wharf is cool a night (there's a thread on potn somewhere... just search for canary wharf)

I'd definately bring the tripod...

hope that helps!

Thanks. She's leaving next Thursday. Very excited. I'll forward this to her. And I heard the dollar is at a new low. Dang it! And I'm giving her some money to buy me something. What should she get for me? Don't break the bank, though.

Hey,

I live in london. A great place to go is the embankment. Embankment station takes you out right by the river. It's walking distance from the Houses of Parliament. She can use the embankment bridge to get great pics over the river.

Thanks. I'll tell her that, too. I guess the chaperones have free time, so she will probably enjoy that.

I took the Eurostar over to London for five nights over the New Year holiday. I also like night shooting, and that's mainly what I did. As the previous poster said, the river area is the best bet, and Saint Pauls cathederal as well as Westminster Abbey are both nice. I was a bit dissapointed with the lighting though, as many significant buildings were poorly lit. The US embassy has to be the ugliest building in the city, if not the whole country, so she won't miss not being able to snap that.

In regards to buying, that's tough, but certainly don't get any photo gear. Haha. I brought back almost 40 pounds(the weight, not money) of brown rice, whole wheat flours, and scottish oats, and good peanut butter, because I can't find suitable ones here. Since you have a Wal-Mart nearby, that's probably not what you're in the market for. My mom though bought some nice tea accesories, maybe a pot and strainer or something. The shop was having a huge sale then, as were most stores, but those might be over now. There are some nice old bookshops on Charing Cross road if that is her/your thing.

I will try to find a picture or two to post. Oh, and definitely bring the tripod.

In London you will have a smorgasbord of opportunities for pictures.
Stock up on CF cards as you will need them.......:)
ENJOY.
