Do i really need to 'format' my card to update the firmware?

It makes sure that there is nothing on the card that will interfere with the upgrading. But what's the problem? I format a card everytime I put it back in a camera.

Allways format your cf card before updating, if you don´t you may have firmware problems and your camera may not work.

Also I remember reading somewhere on the forum to use a memory card smaller or equal to 2GB. Anything larger can cause issues.

I highly doubt you 'need' to. But why not? It's such a simple step.

You should just 'need' to make sure the file is in the right place (usually the root I believe) and not in some nested folder structure or else the current firmware won't be able to find it to load it. That's where formatting helps because then you won't have any subfolders.
