Hey guys

I am currently in the market for a better telephoto, as I only have a 135mm Carl Zeiss which is manual focus.

I figured the reason im looking for another telephoto is cause I dont get a focus confirmation with the zeiss. I figure I might like the lens more if I could actually focus with ease, as the lens is very sharp.

I currently have a regular m42 - EOS adapter, but I would like to try out one with the AF confirmation chip in them.

I dont know which brand to go with, I've seen the haoda (sp?) version and some cheaper ebay versions and I cannot tell the difference between them...

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Are there brighter MF screens or split / prisms for the Rebel? I have an Ee-s in the 5D and it helps things pop into focus a bit better but best with 2.8 and faster.

Also I don't believe the focus confirm adapters have an actual chip? I think they just make the appropriate contacts with the lens mount to tell the camera you have something on there and it should confirm, but I could be wrong. I bought my M42 confirm adapter here:

Good price, quick shipping and it is black. I couldn't find a reason to spend more on it. Here is the sexy Russian-Japanese hookup...

beautiful :)

gah, i just placed an order last week from gadget infinity, i wish i had known earlier :(

i did some searching and it seems like the european versions are supposedly "better" than the chinese versions? i dont know how true this is.

the only reason i want to get an adapter is, i dont know how much longer i will be keeping my rebel xti. the focusing screen is more of a proprietary upgrade vs a universal upgrade with the adapter.

I have both the nikon and olympus adapters... I bought "cheap" china versions and they work well enough for me. And well enough that my 50mm Olympus is the sharpest 50mm lens in my bag I might add...

They do and if you can find the right seller, they will actually "code" them for you. I didn't know this at the time, but what they put on the chip is what shows up in the exif. So if you buy one adapter per lens, then it's nice to have it coded to the FL and widest aperture (it will always report the coded aperture regardless)... But if you reuse the same adapter this can actually be more hassle than it's worth since you'll use a 24mm on a coded 50mm and the EXIF will tell the world it's a 50mm... It can get confusing.

guess which one is the sharpest at 50mm:

There are many who do not like the AF chip adapters. Kinda boils down to your skills and the body/lens. Look at my gear and guess how many adapters I have. Yes, some have chips, some don't.

Thanks. I could see if you're spending >$500 on a prime piece of glass that you would get a custom made full-time adapter for it.

so aside from gadget infinity would you guys recommend buying from haoda? i think they are based in the US, but they sell for $150. they currently have a deal going for $75 bucks instead of the usual $150 they charge.

For what lens? I have ebay adapters because this was a fun diversion for me. My lenses are <$50 used from KEH, so I wanted to spend the least amount possible to get them working. AF confirming fleabay adapters where what I went with.

My thoughts on the AF confirm is you can always not use it. It's a chip added to that sellers same non af confirm adapter, so why not.

i have the carl zeiss jena 135mm.

i could drop money on a 135mm f2 or a 70-200 2.8 non-IS, but at this point in time, i want to see if i can save that money and use the Zeiss.

ive used it sparingly because i dont trust the focus through my xti. it may look good on screen, but once i pull up images on the computer, they are OOF.

i figure if i can spend $75 to keep using a lens, i would save $500-$1000 :)
then of course i could put it aside for my 5d fund... uhh i mean, college book fund!

I shoot Zeiss with a Fuji that has focus confirmation. But I also shot my zeiss on Canon for awhile with no confirmation.

Focus confirmation really does me no good. I don't even pay attention to it. Especially, when shooting at very large apertures it's easier to see the focal plane myself rather than rely on the camera to make those tiny decisions. It will often confirm a focus point that is different from what I'm trying to focus on.

I really think the only way to shoot a zeiss or MF in general is with optimized screens...and then practice a lot and get to know the lens really well. Just an opinion...good luck with whatever you decide.

I find it comforting to get the confirmation of focus, especially since the focusing screen of the typical dSLR is optimized for brightness first, focusing second, and there are no focusing aids like there were on manual film SLRs. I have a Chinese adapter via eBay.
