PRO: build, ergo, AF, fps, tiny files, very sharp pictures

CON: low MP, weight, can't do long exposures, high ISO limitations, battery

No long exposures???? What's the longest you can take? It has no "bulb" setting?

Pros:

  • build
  • AF
  • 8 fps
  • tiny files
  • very sharp pictures
  • IQ
  • best out of the camera JPEGs ever.
  • not much of an AA filter

Cons:
  • low MP
  • weight
  • high ISO limitations (I can shoot 1600 no problem, 3200 is iffy)
  • battery life is horrible (I carry 2+ batteries with me if I'm shooting with it)
  • crappy menus (dual push)
  • horrible LCD (I don't care about size, it's just very dim)
  • long start up time in comparison to newer models
to me it's been the perfect compliment to my 5D. I owned a 1DmII and sold it for this duo and love both camera. My biggest gripe with the 1D is the battery life. I can live with everything else, but never know how many batteries to bring with me is a PITA. I really should toss all 4 batteries mine came with and just buy 2 brand new canon versions. Mine are all older so some hold a charge some don't but it never seems to be consistent. The menu's are a PITA but tolerable. For me 4mp is plenty for what I shoot with this camera. I even have this blown up to 12x16 and it's sharp provided you don't pixel peep (1'+ and it looks fantastic):

it's a killer sports camera. Especially if you don't print much, or bigger than 8x12. I don't shoot sports as much as I'd like, so it's perfect for that. The 5D is my workhorse for anything where I don't need the fps or af.

I do astrophotography and anything longer than 20 seconds starts showing purple corners.

Wow...you almost derailed my inspiration to obtain a 1D. 20 or 30 seconds is plenty for anything I want to do.....(Whew!)

And when I said start, I mean a couple of dots, not a whole bunch. Definitely useable for normal photography. I want something around 2-5 minutes clean.

I would want one just for the 1/500th synch speed! That would be so nice.

Wow, it's funny to read that and see how far we've come. The 1D hasn't been that blown out of the water IMHO because it has the FPS and AF of a 1 series... But look at the D60 stats and think to what the newer versions have now. ISO 1000 max, 3 af points... Wow. Nothing against it as it was groundbreaking at the time, but we've come a long way...
