Well... I did it. I now have a matte focusing screen, an Asahi Super-Takumar 135mm f/3.5, and an m42-eos adaptor on the way.

I know this is old... but which adapter did you get? Did you have any problems with Error1?

I have the m42-EOS adapter (no electrical contacts) on a Zenitar 16mm and I can't figure out how to not get an Err1 when using it...

I also got error 1. Take a look in your camera body, at about 10 o'clock there is a tiny pin that sticks out, just underneath the bayonet mount. It's spring loaded and moves maybe 5mm back and forth. Let me know if you need me to take a picture of it for you.

For some reason, when it is pushed up, the camera gets an error 1 code, you can even just do this with your finger and the shutter won't fire. What I did was to grind away the part of the adapter that was pushing on this pin. Now it works fine.

I see the pin... Do you have a pic of the modded adapter? What'd you use to do the grinding?

My guess is that it tells the camera whether a lens is mounted or not... and if a lens is mounted, it looks to the electrical contacts for information...

That makes sense. Here are two that I snapped a couple minutes ago.

Edit: both with the m42-eos adapter and a Super-Takumar 135 f/3.5

So now... the camera doesn't realize a lens is there at all... Good thing it will fire without a lens

what i did for the adapter is to not turn fully till the click. dangerous though as the lens might drop out if you turn it out too much. seems like only the 1d has this problem as when i used the same adapter on my 10d i didn't have any problems:/ my other adapters worked flawlessly on the 1d though. only the m42 to eos mount has problems on the 1d. if possible could you guys take a picture of the part which you grind-ed off? i do see the pin though its a black one right?
