Mine wouldn't even read the 4GB card. Had to put the 2GB back in.

It will read it. Notice when you take a picture with the 1D and 4gb card. The "Shots Remaining" tally will not be affected. That is, untill you pass below whatever that number on the screen is.

Off the topic of cards, but still with 1D, how many shots per battery should one expect? I have three batteries two I can empty within 10 mins use and can get more life from tthem by shutting on and off the cameara a few times...assume this is memory effect as they are old and I should just buy some non OEM replacements?

More than 10 minutes worth. You've answered your own question.

In my experience the Lenmar's are quite good replacements.

I shot a whole Sweet 16 on one battery with lots of chimping. It was still on 3 bars too. I think it was a canon battery, but it was pretty old....

and how many shots are that?
i see that everybody gets different result...some do 100 and some over 500.
but is there a reliable way to say how much you would get?
i want a 1D so bad, but if i only get arround 50-100 pics per batterie thats a problem for me

My 1D's battery life isn't so great, but I love the camera. Get some spare batteries and keep them charged.

This weekend was a typical example of battery confusion to me. On Saturday I took 121 shots on a fresh battery. When I was done, the charge indicator was still full. Sunday morning I turned the camera on and the charge indicator was blinking. That's the part I don't understand.

But, a freshly charged spare at hand, I swapped batteries and carried on, so no problem.

So the camera uses power without beeing used?
121Pics is not much,...i love beeing arround parties and taking pictures...and so i´m taking something arround 200-400pics a night.
this means i need at least 4 batteries?
Thats very bad for me.
but i also heard from people saying that they get 500shots and more out of 1 1D Classic batterie...

Hehe, yeah the dissaperaing charge happened to me, charged the batteries the night before and while uploading settings from computer kept getting the battery levels low warning and was for all three batteries! I love this camera but seriously I may sell it...My faithful 30D consistantly puts out and seems to go forever....I will give it a new battery as a last chance, then sell it and get a markIIN :)

Man, the quality of those photos make me really want a 1D classic but I keep telling myself I'd be better off with the versatility of a 40D.

Wow all off your pictures look really good.
even the ISO 1250 is aceptable in noise caused by high iso.
and the ISo640(the last one with the guy holding the cam) is almost noisefree to me :)
So there is only 1 thing thats a little problem to me. the batterie life...
is the solution of this problem the original canon charger?!

By refreshing my battery and charging I've gotten 300 photos. Printing worried me most but 8x10 is a breeze for the 1D in my opinion, crops for 5x7 are fine . No worries.
