Hello,

All of a sudden my Canon SD870 will not work with my machine at home which runs Windows Vista Home Premium. I've tried connecting the camera to other machines at work and it works fine there. There seems to be something screwy with my home machine and this literally just happened within the last couple of weeks. To my knowledge, nothing configuration wise has changed with my machine, either.

When i connect my camera, a new item named "Digital Still Camera" gets created under "Portable Devices" in the device manager. This item has the yellow exclamation sign on it signifying a failed driver load. Eventually, Windows will display a bubble on the lower right hand corner of my screen telling me that the device drivers were not successfully installed. At this point I am unable to access my camera.

I tried a lot of things to remedy this situation. I tried uninstalling the "Digital Still Camera" device, I tried rebooting with a minimal set of startup programs, I tried unplugging all of my USB devices and moving the camera to various USB outlets, and I even finally called Canon tech support. When I called canon they told me that this exact issue has been seen before and is in fact one of their most difficult problems. I must have spoke with the canon guy for a good 30minutes. He was unable to solve my problem.

Has anyone encountered this issue before?

EDIT: My camera WAS working correctly with the aforementioned machine for 2 months.

Did it ever run under Vista? If not, then the driver is not compatible with Vista. Go to the Canon web site and see if they have an updated driver. If it did run and now does not, then kick yourself in an appropriate place for loading Vista onto your PC. You are not alone.

A warning to others, don't upgrade to Vista unless you have a compelling reason. A sizable number of IT professionals view it as a providing little benefit and loads of headaches. The biggest issue is incompatible drivers, but it also needs a minimum of 2GB of memory. If you're buying a new PC, ask them to load it with XP.

Microsoft might have downloaded to your computer a Vista patch that disabled the driver. Unfortunately, it's up to the vendors to jump through hoops when Microsoft changes something. Check with Canon again.

I am having the same issue. It worked fine up till 02-14-08 approx. Running vista 32-bit.

I have an ipod touch, blackberry pearl, sirius stilletto 100, wireless keyboard & mouse, and printer. Its all working perfectly except my sd870is.

I have uninstalled all canon software, including the driver and tried reinstalling, but no luck.

I have disconnected all usb devices and tried using the camera alone but no luck.

Did system restore to previous date, but no luck.

I hooked up to my laptop (different computer entirely) and it works fine. So its not a camera problem.

I fixed my problem by uninstalling the software that is supposed to allow the playstaion 3 control to run on your pc. So if your having the same problem, just uninstall the most recent software installed on your computer. Worked for me :)

Sounds like device contention. They probably use the same interrupt.

Go to the Canon site and D/L the latest Zoombrowser for your camera. Or you could go back to Windows XP.
My brother has Vista on his new computer now almost nothing runs. Can't get new drivers if they're more than a few years old. They want you to buy new software, Vista edition... $$$ Microsoft $$$
