Yeah, Pop Photo has to be taken with some seasoning, but it's still an interesting read.

Its by no means definitive, but I think its noise performance is very good considering the number of pixels you are squeezing on the sensor.

This is a snap that I posted before at iso 3200, SS 1/30, and f/1.2. The cat was in a dark room with some light coming in from an adjacent room. I included a 100% crop to help see noise and detail.

Not bad! Did you do any processing on that picture? I only ask because I see a bit of chroma noise (that's the multi-colored noise right?) and I'm pretty sure most programs remove it to some extent as a default.

Have you seen this?

I think it shows how the camera performs in terms of noise to an accurate level.

Yes, I processed it in DPP but used no in camera or DPP noise reduction.

Thanks for the reply. That's impressive for no noise reduction.

I wasn't overly impressed with the high ISO performance of the 1DsMKIII.
(That cat shot is fantastic though)

I guess it's to be expected though with all those mp's crammed in there. There are tradeoffs for everything.

something is wrong with the article, the 1Ds cannot shoot up to iso 25,600. that is a straight copy from the article they wrote about the D3. I think there is a copy/paste error in there.

"But in our noise tests, the 1Ds Mark III did better than expected -- even with minimum noise reduction in the RAW conversion process. So you get the choice of maximizing detail at ISO 1600 (with some noticeable increase in noise in shadow areas) or dropping resolution by 15 percent to 2400 lines while rendering any noise nearly invisible. That's impressive, but the Nikon D3 actually outperforms the EOS 1Ds Mark III in overall image quality at ISO 6400, and it can still capture acceptable newspaper-quality shots at an incredible ISO 25,600."
