Now I've done it. Just picked up a mint 1V-HS (film, I know I know its not digital) from Shutterblade on eBay for $500.00. From what I can tell, and I don't know jack about film bodies, that was a good deal based on the price of the body from Adorama and B&H.

I also ordred up a boat load of B/W film from Adorama, Kodak, Fuji and Ilford, different speeds different grain characteristics. First thing I am going to do is hang the 50 mm f/1.zip on it, wait for darkness, and see what shakes loose.

Don't know yet what I am going to do about processing and printing. If I can't get it done reasonably I guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and learn to do it myself. I think I may be seeing a a darkroom in my future?

$500 is an insane waste of money for a 35mm Canon film body if you're just messing around with b&w film. But if you have the funds and just want a pretty toy then it's fine I guess.

Why does everyone think the only reason to shoot film is for B&W?

Digital can't really hold a flame to low ISO slide film, period. A perfectly good reason to shoot film.

I have Velvia, Provia, Sensia and Kodachrome (yes, kodachrome) in my fridge right now.

Nice snag, I've been eyeing one up for my film photography class next year. I love shooting digital but I cant wait to shoot film! Film when done right looks so much better (IMO) than digital

insane waste of money

Most people would apply that term to a majority of our photography equipment, film or digital. I got an Elan 7NE for Christmas and have been happy with it. It's certainly not my workhorse, but it's fun to use occasionally and that's all I really ask of a film body these days. I did like how the roll of Neopan 1600 B&W came out. I think I'll try more of it.

LOL, I'm sure most people feel the same way about our equipment! Plus, it'll hold it's value much better than our digital bodies, which are practically disposable.

Fortunately for me I don't have to justify my gear or have to make a living with the camera as I know many on this forum do. And my hats are off to them as they are the true source of valuable practical knowledge and infinitely helpful and eager to share what they know at the drop of a hat.

Accordingly, everything I have in my arsenal is for messing around! And I can, and do mess around to my hearts content. I figured the 1V is the top of the line or close to it for a film body. And, yes it is a very pretty toy. All my gear are toys and not tools. If I ever turn pro then the toys will become tools and subject to a different pardigm.

I gave up booze, gambling, corvettes, golf and arabian and apaloosa horses -- raising them, not betting on them. I will sit at a poker table from time to time as I don't consider that gambling.

Shoot, this photography thing is a bargain in comparison to any one of those alternatives.

Fair enough. I was just hoping you didn't get it over a Elan 7 or something because you thought the photos would come out looking better.

You should definitely take a shot at processing and printing your own b&w stuff if you have the space in your home to setup a darkroom. It's tons of fun and really gives you a whole new appreciation for how photography came about.

Thanks Mr Chad. I will file your comments away and definately will plan on shooting some film other than B/W once I get a clue to film, and learn and understand that film is a much slower process than digital. The only thing I know about Kodachrome is that it is a title of a song written and sung by Paul Simon in 1971. Hopefully that will all change over the next few months.

Shoot some Velvia with it... with a colorful subject, it just pops, and it's very addicting to look at! Provia's a pretty good all-around slide film when you don't want the extra saturation of Velvia. For black and white, I like Fuji Acros 100 and Ilford HP5+. Acros is a fine-grained film with excellent reciprocity characteristics; I like it for portraits and any time I want a "cleaner" image. HP5+ is a good all-around film; the grain's a bit chunkier, but that's part of its charm :)

I have to agree with you I have a fridge full of film as well it has its place still but for every day events and all I shoot files not film. But for that saturated landscape or rushing stream at low shutter speed and iso 50 Velvia properly exposed and pierd at through a viewer for the first time ~ ahhhhhhh makes your mouth water :)

Ladies and Gents,

anyone still using film needs to use Fuji Reala. (external link) Its color film but if you have it processed in B&W, the results are definitely worth it. Its a little harder to come by, but its pretty amazing. I'm using it my Minolta XG-1 and i've been very impressed.

I don't see how getting the best Film Camera Canon ever made for less than 1/3rd the original cost is insane, sounds like a great deal to me!
