hey guys,

small dilemma here, i tried searching, but no thread directly comparing the two.

i am considering trading my XTi for a 1D that just had its shutter replaced (good or bad thing?).
i can only stay with one body.

i am well aware that the 1D is only 4 MP, but from what i read, it is 4 glorious MP.
other than the poorer noise control than my XTi, everything should be a step up from what I currently have right?

if i do some shooting for magazines, will the 4MP be sufficient? what about the IQ?

i dont have a lot of 1.3x glass, just the 70-200 2.8, 50mm 1.8, and a zeiss 135. the wides i have are the sigma 17-70, and the tokina 12-24. however, i understand that those lenses are still useable, just not at their extreme wide ends, correct?

am i overlooking anything?

thanks for any input!

depends on what the magazines requirements are. I love my 1D. It's awesome, but if you really think you'll be submitting shots, I doubt they'll take 1D files. If they will, then by all means get it. I've printed up to 12x18s with mine and they are great at arms length. 8x12 (close to magazine size) look great. The AF and FPS are killer. If you don't need that don't bother though.

And be ready to buy some batteries if you get one.

i was hoping you would reply :) i shoot for a few car mags, but i dont know if they would be that picky.

however, if i were to do portraits would that be a problem for print?

i read that list you posted in that other thread... makes me want to think twice.

is the viewfinder the same size as a 1d mk2?

buut, hows the IQ compared to the XTi?

No brainer, IMHO. If the magazine tells you the 4MP files aren't big enough, tell them to think about this: When the 1D came out, it was used heavily by Sports Illustrated.

LOL i love these 1D Threads....

1D Hands down, a properly exposed photo wont give you much noise...some people over expose by 1 stop (without blowing out the highlights) on the 1D to avoid some noise...i think it's fine...

BTW you could always uprez the files and strip the EXIF before sending the pics to the mag. I bet they'd never notice. :D

I can't see why anyone would want to trade you honestly. I'd be weary of something being wrong with their 1D.

i will probably have to add some money on my end.

nothings wrong w/ the 1d, and with a recent shutter replacement i should be good for a lonng time.

the 4 megapixel thing still bothers me a bit though.

will the IQ be the same as what im getting from my XTi?

At the same print size up to 8x10? Possibly better

if it bothers you that much then maybe you shouldn't get it...even though it's an amazing camera. but you can't really crop your photos much...yet the af and fps is amazing! not to mention the 1/500 sync and 1/16000 max ss. I'm thinking about trying to stop some bullets with it sometime soon, when the weather warms up here.

i dont crop much currently, but i guess its more important to pay attention to composition and framing when you shoot with the 1D mmm?

how is the viewfinder size compared to the XTi? 5d?

It blows away the Rebels...all of 'em. Not quite as big and bright as the 5D.
