Sell both the Sigma and the Tokina for a 17-40L or some such. You could actually come out ahead.

No brainer, IMHO. If the magazine tells you the 4MP files aren't big enough, tell them to think about this: When the 1D came out, it was used heavily by Sports Illustrated.

Absolutely. No contest.

It blows away the Rebels...all of 'em. Not quite as big and bright as the 5D.

Is that a positive comment about the 5D?! Oh man hell must've frozen over and pigs must be flying .

Just playin' :D

i was hoping you would reply :) i shoot for a few car mags, but i dont know if they would be that picky.

however, if i were to do portraits would that be a problem for print?

is the viewfinder the same size as a 1d mk2?

1&2, all comes down to print sizes... 8x12s kick ass. No issues at all. Above that you will see a difference up close, BUT NOT AT THE DISTANCE YOU SHOULD VIEW THEM AT... But again, magazines might have an issue.

the viewfinder is identical to the 1DmII. I never owned them both at the same time, but weeks apart they seem exactly the same.

they won't care now. Call them and ask them if they will or if they have a requirement sheet you can look at.

BTW you could always uprez the files and strip the EXIF before sending the pics to the mag. I bet they'd never notice. :D

that might work, and if it does it's brilliant. But some magazines REQUIRE raw now.

will the IQ be the same as what im getting from my XTi?

I owned a XTi for a while too BTW. Nothing against it, but the 1D will blow it out of the water IQ wise IMHO. You do lose pictures styles if that matters but you have more adjustments in camera. They're just more complicated to understand (especially the sharpening, but once dialed in it's amazing)

i dont crop much currently, but i guess its more important to pay attention to composition and framing when you shoot with the 1D mmm?

how is the viewfinder size compared to the XTi? 5d?

Learn to crop with the camera. That will help tons if using a 1D. The viewfinder is much bigger/brighter than a XTi... 5D? Similar.

My biggest concern for you would be the MP issue. And it's not that the 1D isn't capable of some impressive shots and enlargements, it's that some magazines will require bigger files. See if you can discuss this with your contacts because if they don't care then it's a perfect camera for you. Also it's only an issue if your shots are getting used for a full page layout. Anything smaller and it's fine.

I don't want to scare you away from the 1D. And what was said about it being used by magazines is true. SI and others LOVE(d?) this body. But some other magazines have issues with small files. Just ask the question to be safe. If it's OK, buy the 1D and a few batteries for it and don't look back.

Be sure to check this first.... does the camera come with the charger? If the answer is yes, you are good to go.... if not, be ready to shell out some substantial money ($300+ for the canon brand) to get one. And you will need batteries. No question. Also, be prepared to spend some time getting used to it. You will be going from arguably one of the smallest (in your hands) cameras to the largest. It's big and heavy and you will fall in love instantly.

It is pretty damned cold here. Haven't seen any ham in the sky yet though.

I've always found magazines vetoing of a camera because of it's MP is a BS reason in all honesty. What SHOULD matter is the shoot. None of these bloody magazines print larger than A4, and for that, the 1D is *JUST* fine.

The 1D is larger, heavier, but better built, with weather sealing, and the AF eats the XTi imho. Then there's the 100% viewfinder, spot metering if you need it, greater customisability from memory and so on.

You will need to consider the working ISO range that you're working with, up to ISO 800 the 1D is fine, above that, imho, it's extremely poor. Also, consider if you'll be doing long exposure shots - anything more than 30 seconds results in nasty blue glows in the top left/right corner due to the amps for the CCD. Nasty. A design flaw if ever there was...on and no LCD magnificer.

In all honesty, save a few more pennies and go for a Mark II or Mark IIn - much better performers.

Dave
