I am buying a new point and shoot for everyday use when i dont want to lug around my rebel and for using video on my daughter. I have only had a sony cybershot and i really like the canons so figured i'd just stay with them and just buy a p&s. I can't decided between these two cameras. I like the 570 bc of the IS which is about it and the price, and i like hte 580 bc of the bigger megapixel. I have heard people sya things about battery life for the 570. Not what i wanted to hear bc that was the one i was going towards. They are btoh in my price range though and i couldn't find to many reviews for the 580. i alwaos was thinking of the A720.
Anyone suggest another camera besides these two possibly under $200

I bought the A720 IS because of the GREAT reviews it got and I'm not sorry. It's only a few bucks more than the A570. A lot of DSLR owners are buying the A720 as walkaround camera because it is VERY similar to the G9 in IQ and very versatile. I've got the CHDK so I can shoot Raw and have the histogram, battery meter etc...that's my .02 cents anyway.

^And it's still under $200. Probably can't find review on the A580 because it;s new. Tends to be a problem when no one has it. Not sure why you'd want something w/o IS and no improvement over something with and...the same.

I forgot to mention that the A720 has the same Digic III processor and the same 6X Zoom lens as the G9. Quite a handful for the price.

I bought a 570IS but it drained batteries like they were going out of style. I returned it and got another one which was better with batteries but the shutter button was intermittent. I returned it and got a 720IS. Man, what a nice camera! It is noticeably faster than the 570. Shutter lag is much less. Focus speed is faster. IQ was also better than the 570.

If I had it to do over again, I'd not even look at the 570.

+1 for the A720IS. Great camera, plain and simple - one of the best in its class.

Best wishes,
Oleg.

Im suprised by this, dont get me wrong I believe you but I have been wondering whether to get the A570 or the A720 & going by reviews online it seems IQ, Noise etc are identical, so it comes down to features.

Makes me wonder about the 720IS now, perhaps this would be a better buy over the A570IS.

I own an A720, and it's as good as everyone above said. The extra reach is a nice feature over the 4X cameras. I'd never recommend the 580. Image Stabilization is a remarkable feature, and can often make the difference between a keeper and a blown shot.

Try another set of batteries, maybe the ones you have has problem. Also you can use 2700mah batteries with your current charger and camera, though they would take slightly longer to fully charge.

The battery problem is a known issue, I use the CHDK hack on my A720IS & that allows me to configure the battery meter which seems to help, but its no hardship having another set of AA's in my pocket so im not too fussed.

If you have any interest in being able to control your camera, rather than just taking whatever settings it gives you, don't get the A580. It isn't a successor model to the A570; the A590 is that. The A580 is successor to the A560. It lacks any way for the user to control shutter speed or aperture in normal shooting. If you're going to get that, you may as well include the SD series in your market pool. I'd say, without checking price, A570, A590 or A720 are the ones to look at.

Jon I don't know about the other two but I picked up a A720IS today on Amazon for $188.00, Thats quite a deal on a camera with it's features. As I said in another post I doubt that there will be another P&S with it's features under $200.00 again, not to mention it's reputation on this forum.

Yes the A720IS is a very capable little P&S, it may not have the same quality feel as say a G9, but its nice & small & image quality is right up there, I took these recently just for test purposes.
