Canon 28-135 IS USM Lens

Hello there

I am having some problems with this lens.
Its only 4 months old and I have problems with the focusing. I tend to use the Central Focal point , and the images I get are slightly out of focus. For instance I took a picture of a couple and the guy was out of focus compared to the woman. I have tried using the 7 focus points and thats too inconsistent.
Its not even as if the aperture is wide, and even if it was set to 3.5 surely they should both be in focus.

The problem tends to happen with flash and indoors,

f/3.5 is 'wide open' for the 28-135 lens.

Depending on your distance to the target, I would assume that you get a relatively shallow depth of field.

How are the results at f/5.6 or f/8?

Yes they are no bad I dont know whether its just my poor photography or the lens, I have read other topics about this lens and the replies are mixed about the quality and some people suggest that the Tamron 28-75 is far better.

I'm just not happy with some of the photos, most are good but what I dont understand is that even at f3.5 when the people are standing together and the AF point is fixed on one of them anything in that plane should be clear and its not.

How about telling us what camera settings you were using and maybe posting a sample of the problem images. Maybe it's not the lens itself but a combination of a couple of things such the camera setting and your camera technique.

Yes, the Tamron 28-75 is supposed to be sharper than the 28-135 IS.

Take a look at this review of the Canon 70-300 DO lens. It's in German only, but there are some 100% crops (click at the links below the pictures with the coloured markers) that show a comparison between the Tamron 28-300, Canon 28-135, Canon 70-200L and Canon 70-300 DO.

These shots both show how the lens performs wide open and stopped down. Especially open, the pictures show tremendous differences.

Unfortunately, the 28-135 is only featured in the 70 mm comparison, not in the 135 mm comparison.

Also, bear in mind that it might have a lot of reasons why a photo does not turn out as good as you expect ... it can be out of focus, the lens can be 'soft', there might be motion blur because the shutter time was too long, etc...)
