I got my wife a Nano for Christmas & its already dead. So back to Costco with it (no problems with the exchange). My wife had to pick up a prescription & while talking with the pharmacist discovered she had already exchanged 3 Nanos that she bought as gifts (oddly enough, from BestBuy)

So Apple people, what's the deal with the quality control? Just a coincidence, or too much success too fast?

I'm thinking its just of late. I have the previous generation Nano. Several years old with nary a problem. Battery life is not as advertised, but other than that ...
I really like the device & the packaging was nearly a work of art. The new ones come in a crummy plastic box (perhaps reading in too much on this)

Get the touch instead...it's lovely. :-) I've had mine about 7 months, and no problems. That's not all that long, but hey.

It's weird, really. I've been using my first gen nano for a good two or three years now with no problems (even using an alternative firmware, Rockbox), but it seems like at least half of the people I know with iPods have had hardware issues with them. This is all just anecdotal, of course: we'd need some numbers to know if there's really any issue...

I've had an iPod mini for a couple of years now and no problems at all.(Sort of) glad I didn't upgrade after hearing of the nano's problems.

I dread the day the battery dies. Guy at work had to replace one. Not sure which iPod, but let's just say Apple's customer service leaves something to be desired. And what, something like 60 bucks for a battery? Come on.
Still, with all these issues, I still like mine. At least it's not a Sony. OMG, I hope they didn't farm out production to Sony!

I bought my wife a Nano for Christmas about a year ago. A couple of things I don't like about it

1. We hate iTunes. Apple forces us to use this to download files. What I most prefer is to just open explorer and drag my music files to the device. This is simple and easy, but evidentally Apple doesn't think so. We wound up uninstalling it and bought a copy of Anapod from Red Chair Software. Anapod is fantastic.

2. My wife is having numerous problems with the Nano freezing up. This happens to her a couple of times a month, and she has to reset it.

When this one goes out she is going to try something else. She likes the Nano for it's size. Something the size of the Touch is simply too big. She has expressed an interest in the Zune. Will have to check that one out.

I've had my ipod five years now and have had numerous run-ins with customer service at Apple. It's still chugging on despite the numerous frustrations I have with it.

XPlay from www.mediafour.com (external link) is also excellent, and I used it for a long time before I got rid of my iPod.

I bought my first ever ipod, an 80Gb classic, a few weeks ago. I am amazed by this machine - it has all my music on it, a bunch of photographs, numerous pod casts I subscribe to, and still has 64 spare Gb

I was going to get the touch, for the wifi browsing mainly, but decided the classic was better value, in part because of the extra Gb.

I still find it amazing to be wandering around with ALL my music and most of my cherished photographs in my pocket. I've been enjoying albums I had forgotten I had, as well as rediscovering ones I wish I'd never bought. and all my CDs are now in the attic out the way. I also bought a Klipsch speaker dock to plug in into, and this gives amazing sound quality ( though I am no audiophile) and all in all, I am delighted with the system. Hell, I'm even considering getting a mac when I upgrade my computer....sucker for marketing and design I guess...

As far as customer service goes, I think that is an issue with all big corporate entities. They just don't realise how importantI am....;)

i think it all depends on what ipod you get.

my buddy has an older version of 40gb ipod (i think its a 40gb) and he didnt have issue until recently it would start to freeze once in a while but its probably 3-4 yrs old.

i bought a 30gb just over a yr ago and havent had any issues. i even dropped it screen down (while in a leather case but the case was open) from say 4' high and it didnt even scratch it

I like it just because of the apple store. I bought one used off of ebay and of course it only worked for about an hour. Took it into the store and left with a brand new one in about 30 minutes. Apple may have problems just like everyone else but try that with some other products. There isn't even someplace to go much less a person to talk to on the phone.

I have 2 Nanos, 1 mini, and a new touch with 8 gb memory. I have never had trouble with them, but my desktop died and all my music disappeared and the battery was out on the nano so I lost everything. Other than that, the touch battery is so limited, I have to charge constantly.

As long as I have wifi off, my iPod Touch will last for hours and hours. I'd say at least 4 hours, as I've watched two full length movies before and still had battery left.
