Horses for courses, I find it rare that I don't get at least one 30" canvas order from a wedding now.

Fair enough. Different areas differ in products they want. But at least the 20D is still totally capable of putting out 30" canvases.

Hey Lloyd....I have a sincere question for you, so please take this at face value. If the 20D and 30D are almost always up for the job, then why did you buy a 1D?

I have to admit the 1D was kind of a frivolous thing. My wife INSISTED that I buy it because I had talked about how amazing of a camera it is. In fact, she almost bullied me into buying it and asked me week after week if I had put my order in. I admitted I like the dual card slots and amazing focusing system (I haven't had any focus issues with it) so I got it. Totally not needed. Had I known how awesome the 40D was going to be, I may have just waited and got that instead.

Moments, I don't think the next 5D will be out until the fall/winter. The current 5D is a great camera. I don't own one, but have used it enough to know what I don't like about it. The sensor is huge... yes it is. Which also means the viewfinder is huge. Normally that's a good thing, but that is what really bothered me. (go ahead and flame me guys) When the light is low, like in any reception, I had a really hard time using any of the outer focus points; I could only use centre. But with such a HUGE viewfinder, it's a LONG ways from the centre to the edge of the frame! A lot more so than the 20D. So focusing and then recomposing required changing the angle of the camera lot more so than with my 20D. To make it worse, the larger sensor gives a smaller DOF, which makes recomposed shots even worse!! And I don't know what it is about the 17-55, but it's focusing ability and speed are just CRAZY and smoke the 24-70L (I use both REGULARLY), and having to use the 24-70L on the 5D put me further handicapped over the 20D/17-55 combo. The 20D/17-55 lets me AF on the outer points when the 5D/24-70L absolutely would not let me. I was getting very frustrated. I MUCH prefer the way the AF points are spread out on the 20D than the 5D due to the smaller sensor.

In a nutshell, I was getting better shots and having an easier time shooting in the dark with the 20D than the 5D. Of course, the new 5D2 would probably change things, but this is just my personal experience and opinion. It's performance just didn't jive well with my shooting style. I'm sure it works great for others because they shoot with different techniques than I.

So in my own opinion, I would rather shell out more for a 1DsII or III than a 5D any day. I think the ability to use the outer points in the dark is KEY for such a large sensor.

Well, no kidding, if you are using the same lens on each. If you use similar AOV lenses (which, of course, would require two different lenses) the situation you complain about wouldn't be.

I'm no "pro" but I use the 5D/20D combo when I shoot an occasional wedding. I would say a nice FF and crop body combo would be great for all different types of shots you would look to get at a wedding.

ok, fair enough, that's what I get for writing before I was fully awake before my cup of tea.

I guess my overall impression was... in GENERAL, with the focus points all bunched in the centre of the frame like the 5D, rather than scattered closer to the edges like the 20D, it takes a lot more recomposing. I should have broken it into separate paragraphs to show I was thinking about something else. That goes along with my less DOF comment, knowing that you have to use a longer focal length to get the equivalent FOV.

i just remember experiencing a lot of frustration using the focus points on the 5D compared to the 20D.
