Hello all,

I have a Powershot SD700 IS and I just want to take consistently good pictures. It seems like some are better than others. Are there any settings or something I can make sure to do every time that will help? Is this just part of using this type of camera?

You need to be more detailed. Maybe post some examples.

But first thing that comes to my mind is, outside vs indoors. Indoor shots will have more noise which will degrade an image. Outside pictures usually come out much better, and more vibrant.

Would you use the indoor auto setting when taking a picture indoors?

I'm not too familiar with your camera, but I don't think the different settings are going to help much. I think that will just boost the ISO and use flash. I personally like to always use available light and keep the ISO low as possible. Maybe tripod or monopod would help. as I said, we could help more if you told us exactly what is the problem though. Sample pics explaining would help even more.

I own and love my SD800 IS, which I believe is similar. I always keep it on the "M" setting at ISO 80 or 100, superfine, Large, flash off. This has given me excellent results in all outdoor conditions. Now for night, low light, and indoor shooting, I carry a handy little gorillapod tripod with me to keep it stabilized. This set-up compbined with the aforementioned settings work like a charm every time!!

Here is a pic of the set-up and an example low-light shot using it.

In case you were wondering, the photo is the Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima, Japan. I wrapped the gorillapod around the railing that surrounds the Dome and used a 2 sec. auto timer to prevent camera shake.
The EXIF data is: f3.5, 2.5 sec, ISO 100.

Hope this helps!

Oh, and by the way, I NEVER use the auto or scene settings and rarely the flash, only the manual mode!! Unless of course I'm SCUBA diving and use the underwater scene mode to kill some of the blue, but that's talk for an entirely different forum! ;)
