I'm personally not a fan of Optus, they're barely better than Telstra. However, you might want to check out the plan search on Whirlpool - bc.whirlpool.net.au

Or the forums there, esp. the Optus one, to see what people are saying.

forums.whirlpool.net.au

Optarse have been known to charge for data both ways, just like Tel$tra.

Reading back over it, the times may not be quite right, but its all on the translink site.

Ok, I went and had a trawl -

Your go card will be able to calculate one overall fare for the journey, as long as you follow the following transfer rules:

you must touch on to start each new trip of your journey in the same zone (or adjoining zone for stops with dual zone) where you touched off to finish the previous trip

after you touch off to finish each trip of your journey, you must touch on to start the next trip within the 60 minute transfer window

after touching on to the system at the beginning of your journey, you must touch on to start the final trip of your journey within the three and a half hour maximum transfer time

you must touch off at the end of the last trip of your journey within the five hour maximum journey time

you can transfer up to three times in one journey.
If your transfer is within these rules you will see the message Continuation of Travel on the card reader display when you touch on at the start of each new trip.

So yeah, not as flexible as the paper system.

BUT, apparently if used the right way, it might be cheaper than say a weekly ticket - maybe:

After six journeys, in a seven day period (Monday to Sunday), you save 50% on each subsequent journey.

This resets each Monday, with no discounts carried over from the previous week.

Quick thoughts - Optus Fusion?

$99 per month for ADSL2, 20 GB download limit rate limited if you use it all, line rental, all local & std calls included.

We have iPrimus atm, around $110 per month, but calls are paid for separately & we have 12 GB of downloads. Plus it's just standard ADSL, so slower. I probably know the answer already, but...

Anyone know of any better value deals around? Or should I just sign on the bottom line when they come back later?

Thanks guys!

As stated earlier, Optus is only slightly better than Telstra. The Fusion plans also include uploads.
Phone Telstra and get them to put you on the Homeline Budget Plan $19.95 per month. If they ask any questions about Broadband just play dumb and tell them nothing. Due to their operational separation they are not allowed to look at those records even if you are with another provider.

Calls are 30c per local and more for STD.

Sign up for the whirlpool plan here. http://www.mynetfone.com.au/offers/whirlpool (external link)
Calls are 10c untimed to any landline in Australia and 15c per minute for all mobiles with no flagfall. I have used them for years without problems.

Then you will need to find out who had a DSLAM in your exchange. Go here http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ (external link) and type in your phone number and find out who has DSLAM's in your exchange. If your lucky you will have an iiNet or Internode DSLAM in there.

Then take your pick of these plans http://iinet.net.au/products/broadband/plans.html (external link) without the phone line and I selected the VOIP as it increases your data allowance.

If you need anymore info let me know.

Buuut. You will be left paying a full daily fare on the saturday as well just to get the cheap fare on the sunday. And personally, i would rather have free travel one day on the weekend and still be able to relax at home without dealing with the hell that is public transport just one day a week.

Yeah, I just did the maths... not happy at all. I used to buy a monthly and then if the mood took me, jump on a ferry at lunchtime and walk back to the office at no extra cost - or on meetups, have no qualms about taking a ferry to Newfarm or wherever but now it'll cost (admittedly 50% of a normal fair, presuming one is using the ticket every day during the week).

So, before they had a system that encouraged public transport usage like the good Green citizens we're all meant to be, and now they have a system that is setup to be a commercial entity - it's not, it's a Govt run service which we already pay taxes to subsidise.
