Which one??? Been thinking about this myself.

Greg. We sharpen all our knives (except my Shuns) with one of THESE (external link)

It's an excellent electric sharpener and it comes from a local Brissy boy, so no warranty problems.

I sharpen the Shuns with a set of three whetstones...it takes a while though.

Hmmm....funny....I have a Mundial which won't keep its edge...grrrrrr. And my daughter's set of Furi's don't stain at all and stay pretty sharp (but they are HORRIBLE to hold).

My favourite knives are my lovely Shun Chefs Granton Knives (external link) with damascus steel. They're wicked sharp and could split the atom:D

Mmmm they looked good too... I like Wustof but they're too exy :( someone give me more money :(

Thanks Jim.

Here's an example of the 180 as a Portrait lens. Canon 180mm 1/400 s at F 4.50 with ISO 100

hehehe, probably can't get quite as shallow DoF as the 85 but I think the longer focal length compresses the background more to make it look super smooth. That was one of the first things I noticed when I first started using it.

Gotta bolt for 5min and pick up Morgan from school.. back soon.

*droool*

I use Victorinox, and they're quite nice to hold, but don't keep an edge as well as I'd like. For sharpening I use a steel, but would love a good set of stones.

Do any of you guys own the Sigma 10-20mm lens?

Yep! Love it to bits. The distortion at 10mm is great fun and when you get used to it you can really use it to your advantage.

Ospi wrote in post #4945410 (external link)
If you buy from B&H or Adorama i think you are fine to send it there also, i made the mistake of buying my sigma lenses from DigitalRev so i have to pay to get them claibrated or repaired.

Lucky I bought my Siggy from CameraHouse up here - it's focussing seems to be a little inconsistent unfortunately.. At the moment I can deal with it no worries but if it gets worse I might send it off for calibration.. I'll have to check it out on another body, though - just make sure it's not the 350D AF system starting to crap out...

Jim G wrote in post #4946449 (external link)
Just as a curious point... I kept on hearing conflicting stories about lens warranties re: grey market/US import lenses and Canon Australia not recognising them...

I just called them and any lens bought anywhere in the world will be warrantied by Canon Australia within the warranty period. People kept on telling me it was either L lenses alone that this applied to or that it applied to none of them but now I know!

Just thought I'd share that... this is probably one of those things that everyone already knows and I'm coming in late but I was happy to find out for sure :p

Jim, that's good to hear. I bought my 24-70 (and my 70-200) from DDP so they're grey market.. My 24-70 seems to be front focussing a bit (mainly wide open, though, so it might just be an issue of user error) so I might send it to be touched up just to take advantage of the warranty work :p Just hope they don't look at the dent in the filter thread and do the old "not warranty - it's been abused" trick! :o However, same goes for the 24-70 as for the siggy. Not going to do anything 'til I've had the chance to test it on another body.

You know, you sure have racked up quite a few posts worth of innane posts since I was last in. :p I've changed from 25 to 15 posts per page so it's (a bit) worse now. :|

Catch-up time. Pity I can't even quote what was said on the old thread since I last posted. :(

Dave (9075, old thread) - I have shot T-max with the 12-24. There is a graveyard between Helen's place and the nearest main road, so I took a few there, and in town I took a couple more to continue this series (external link) I've had going for a while. But now I'm saving it for the BCG meet.

Paul (9103) - Perhaps you could buy a 16-35 or a 12-24 to fill that space? ;)

Kinnon (9118 ) - I want a Wii too. Don't think it'd get much use, though.

Andrew (Leitch) - So? Wouldn't posting more mean you have less of a life? ;) haha jks. :)

If i had a laptop with a decent battery, i could keep posting from my lectures :p

Most lecture halls at QUT have power outlets in them, so you could run it off that. Limits where you can sit, but I have a ****ty battery too and it works. :)

Ahhhk, could be an idea for the next meet. Sat 15th, Lismore shopping square.....photos of me getting my head shaved!

That would be an idea. ;)

letterman kinda fails in the laughs department :(

I find it usually depends who he has on. Although I do agree that some knowledge of US sports, politics and things like that would help.

i forget which page i left of in thread 2 (was it thread 2?) but i'm kind of back. my car (the pulsar) is pretty much stuffed...

<snip>

so pretty much all spending for the camera is on halt now, which kind of sucks. i do plan to make do with what i have though, hopefully going out with a mate who is interested in photography on thursday to take some sunrise shots. i am not sure where to go though, any suggestions?

Welcome back, Tim. :) Shame about the car. :(

As for sunrises... Sandgate maybe?

Sandgate is good for sunrises, particularly with the jetty and all.

LOL! :D it's 'manual' zoom... press button, twist, pull off, put on new lens... you've zoomed from 35mm to 135 :D

I believe that foot zoom is also handy.

deviantART's default is 25, but now when people say "x pages ago" it'll mean the same for me as it does them. :)

Didn't go to cedar creen because of the rain but walked the massive 20m to my creek instead. Installed lightroom again and had a play, it certainly does have its advantages over adobe raw, presets are cool. Also where can i resize the image in LR and have the option to keep correct proportions etc?

Anyway here's a pic i took, just playing with some presets and stuff.
