Oh nooooooooooooooo ..

I know some of you have lots of experience with purchasing through B & H in the USA.

I am just wondering about the GST and import taxes (exist ?). In the ordering sequences, there is a question about whether I should tick off the prices on the packing slip ???

What is the best way as I do not know the procedure done by the Custom people. Should I just let the prices on the packaging slip ? I am sure either way, they would get their monies off me somehow lol :D

My purchase is likely to be over a grand since I am getting the 70 - 200 4L IS ...

Any better suggestion to do this ??? I heard there is a brokerage fee on top of the GST/Import ??? How much is it ?

Thank you in advance ? :D

If you purchase an item from B&H that exceeds $1,000 AUD in value (INCLUDING FREIGHT) you will have to pay GST of 10% of the AUD value. Australian Customs calculates the GST from the packing slip attached to the box. B&H will NOT understate the value at all, so don't bother asking them. There is no import duty on photographic equipment.

If you order your item to be delivered using USPS (United States Postal Service) it will arrive at Australian Customs and they will send you notification and a bunch of forms to fill out including payment of GST. When you return the forms and payment, they send your parcel to the nearest Post Office.

If you order your item via UPS Couriers, they will notify you when it's here and you pay them the GST plus a processing fee (my last one was about $50) and they will deliver it to your door.

Oh and a bit of a thread on OCAU (external link) is forming about it.

From what I read, taking photos on QR platforms WITHOUT FIRST IDENTIFYING YOURSELF TO STAFF is now an offence.

The guidelines, which were updated last September, state members of the public must identify themselves to rail staff before they start taking photographs of trains, platforms and, even Go Card machines.

So let's see what happens when you ask first.

Oh, and from OCAU: "I see the Courier Mail have a fresh batch of cadet reporters and no news for them to report.

IMAGE: http://forums.overclockers.com.au/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif
" This particular reporter has been with the C-M for about 10 years now. Not exactly a cadet.

People overreact sometimes.

In news with more far-reaching consequences, Campo's has a wall. (external link)

Hmm, wonder if he got council approval to build that? Sounds like someone is jealous that others are better than him!

Might see what i can find out through uni. Again, its pretty much related to what im doing (development applications of all kinds and planning approval for them).

Should give the guy who erected it a call and the council as well

Campos need to erect a sign on their side, above the wall giving directions and a mud map to the coffee shop that serves better coffee than the swill served in James Street ;-)a

The alternative is to see if you can obtain the lens, albeit an imported rather than USA one, from a local supplier. I went through the exercise recently and found it cheaper to buy locally.

Although the AU$ vs US$ is pretty keen at the moment, there is sometimes little in it, depending upon the lens purchased.

Options - Cameras Direct, Photo Buff etc.

B&H (closing for a fortnight for holiday from tomorrow $1,059 US, plus freight (about $70) and exchange rate = AUD$1260 plus GST will take it to over $1400 Aust. I think there's some sort of handling fee of $60, too

Photo Buff $1379 plus freight, CD $1369 plus freight

Hardly think a p!ssy little wall will stop us getting to what is arguably the best coffee in Brisbane.

DD is around that price too. Plus, with ordering from one of those, you will get faster shipping than from the states.

Thanks guys for the input here. I know BH is closing for 2 weeks or so, that is the reason I thought I plan a bit should I wait or not ? :D. I have bought some filters from them as well in the past, but well under A$1000.00.

I am not too keen on the grey import as I do not where they come from plus the insurance is a bit of issue. I rather go straight to the manufacturer to be sure. Having said that, there is nothing wrong with the grey market type as they are just supppsed to be marketed to other countries.

I am also buying other stuff from them as well actually like step down rings and B + W CP for the lens etc etc for my converters which I could not find here. I think B & H should be the way to go and the combo helps with the shipping etc etc ( not much difference on top rather than ordering separately)

I do not mind the GST bit but I resent the 50 bucks for UPS processing fee !!! I wonder if I choose the International Express Post, I could go around the processing fee, but again it is a bit troublesome isn't it plus the paperwork that Paul mentioned ?

I think I can wait a bit as I haven't got the body 450D body yet. I might get to it this weekend though.

Just thought I share, somebody suggested in dpreview that you might be able to get away with the GST bit if your order is not exceeding the A$1000 significantly through the postal service. So, I need to make up my mind which way to go :(

I think I am definitely way way over probably in the mid 1k. But I still resent the processing fee. Wonder if Australia Post charges processing fee as well ?

Thanks once again.

Best regards

Al
