Train drivers might think you are a signal? :lol:

They dont want you to look too obvious so they can say you were trying to be discreet and "suspect" ;)

lol, they're pretty much the same thoughts I had.

Although it's fair enough I suppose. I once mistook a chap waiting for a taxi as a parking meter. It was a bit tricky getting the coins in and once I had I didn't really think I got my money's worth before he expired.

Campos need to erect a sign on their side, above the wall giving directions and a mud map to the coffee shop that serves better coffee than the swill served in James Street ;-)a

I wonder if they did that would James St, try to put a visual pollution suit on them?

Oh it would be on for young and old...

I think I might print some labels to wear when I go there on Saturday for a coffee

something like "I enjoy shopping at wheel and barrow but won't drink the James Street coffee - Try Campos - the best!!"

I do not mind the GST bit but I resent the 50 bucks for UPS processing fee !!! I wonder if I choose the International Express Post, I could go around the processing fee, but again it is a bit troublesome isn't it plus the paperwork that Paul mentioned ?

Honestly Al, the paperwork wasn't that bad. Australian Customs are well and truly used to handling it and process it all very quickly.

Can somebody explain this bit to me:

:confused::confused:

So if two of us stand near a crossing in red shirts waving our arms will the train driver mistake us for boom gates???

I dunno, but I'll surely be there to photograph it ;-)a

I'm sorely tempted to take my camera with me tomorrow and photograph as many train related things as I can - very conspicuously too.

Still cogitating over 100-400..

I have a friend in Sydney who shoots birds and bats on Canon glass.

He also shoots street stuff on Leica. And MF on a Linhof Technica. We know good images when we see them.

He bought the 100-400L and both our jaws hit the ground. Awesome. Superb. Sublime.

Do not hesitate.
Do not wait.
If you shoot Canon and want reach - You Buy Now !!!

f = G/D (@ iso 100)

So, f = (13/2) / 2 (because it's iso 200 you divide the whole lot by half).

f = 3.25 (so f/3.2 should do it).

I'm assuming you've using the feet based Guide #, not the one based on meters, otherwise you'll need to either convert the GN or the distance to the same unit first.

Turns out I was using the metre-based guide number. :rolleyes: The correct number is 43.

That in mind, I get the following:

f = (g/d) @ iso 100

f = (43/2)

f = ~22 (or f/11 @ 200 iso)

I'm bringing all this up after the fact. I was mucking around with my camera yesterday while my friend and I were waiting for her bus, and f/11 was working better than anything wider. :)

Ok... next question: how do I determine the shutter speed to go with it w/o using a grey card? Trial and error?

Queensland Rail has made photography on their stations an act of terrorism...

http://www.news.com.au …3739,23553587-952,00.html (external link)

That's why all smart trainspotters don't trainspot near stations. :p If you're on public land (such as public parkland) and not on QR property they can't touch you.

I don't know for sure but if you're wearing a red one they might think there's an emergency and stop. Particularly if you're waving your hands. :p Like I said, I don't know. You shouldn't need one anyway if you're on the platform. You only need one if you're down near the track (which is illegal anyway without proper certification).

EDIT: Normal shirts... maybe not so much. High-vis clothing? Probably. ;)

Sorry, I meant after figuring out the aperture for using flash. :o Sunny 16 may not work when you're sitting at a bus stop after the sun has gone down. :p

Well it depends on how much ambient you want. If you don't care, shoot at max sync speed (1/200 on most Canons, although some do 1/250). If you want some background, drag the shutter more.

Other thing to watch is the GN calc only works without modification when the flash is on the same axis as the camera. If you're flashing from off-camera the GN calc is reduced, so if your flash is at 45 degrees to your subject then the GN calc drops by about 70%.

Chapter 10 in Light Science and Magic covers all this quite well :)
