Whilst I'm not doubting the accuracy of the BOM, last night Firefox (weather add-on) indicated "rain", but today google calendar indicates Sunday to have a "chance of rain" at the mo.

Whilst I'd love a sleep in, I'm hoping the "chance of rain" is minute, and there is a break in the drizzle so we can do our thing. Oh, and weather sealing on a 400D is not the best, I've heard.

Yeah I'm planning on making a raincoat for the 400D.

My weather widget thingy now says "Rain, possible moderate falls, windy" for Sunday.

Weather sealing?!? What weather sealing? ;)

If I had film, I'd take the 3000N. Dave and Peter have seen just how resilient that thing is. :|;) And I've made a mental note not to put my umbrella in my tripod bag from now on...

One thick large white plastic bag with a whole cut in the end and I've now got a camera raincoat :)

Oh, anyone know the easiest way to get a lens+body calibrated ? My 400D seems to back focus a bit, very noticeable at close range, large apertures with the 70-200 and even on the the old 50/1.8. Autofocus seems to be focussing about 2cm behind the focus point, fairly consistently.

Ahh, the old back-focussing problem. It's usually caused by having an inappropriate lens attached to the body. Most likely it would be one you purchased recently. I'd just write it off as a poor choice - just bad luck really.

But I'm prepared to help you out - I'm prepared to give you up to $1,000 for this lens which, TBH, is a great deal, considering the problems it's caused you since you got it.

Think about it. You know it's the right thing to do....

:p
;)

Seriouslah - have you used the focus card to test it? I think it's a case, assuming BF is the issue, of sending it to one of the local providers (couple of names were tossed around 2-3 days ago in the thread IIRC) to look at.

hahaha Yes well if it wasn't happening on the 50mm as well, then I might suspect the new lens, but I think it's more of a body issue.

Oh and that generous offer... I think I'll have to pass ;-)a

Ah fair enough. I haven't tried the focus card test yet, but just noting that when shooting the biscotti (external link) I just made, AF put the focus on the back of the saucer, but the focus point was on the biscotti. Manual focus to the rescue in this case.

More and more so, given all this rain. The BoM reckons we've had 25mm since yesterday morning, but it's still raining heavily here.

Quite a lot more to come by the looks of it.

Mmmmmm, perhaps another shoot is due then Dave, for those of us that missed out on the summer one ;)

Although looking at my diary the free time is certainly just as bad.

Ive got a weather sealed battery door and CF compartment door :p

Although as i have the old grip, i have lost my weather sealing there...:lol:

Oh and its not been 3 days since the first message to the ebay seller and 2 days since the updated one and still nothing. I looked up his username on OCAU and he has been online. Dads already said he will buy the ones i have off me if i want, but im just angry that i didnt get what i paid for and i want an apology (which i kind of expected by now given his stellar reputation...)

Well if you want to throw in the nifty too, happy to take that off your hands...

The focus card (you know what I mean?) will give a specific measurement on how far back/front focussing the lens is.

Or, if no card available, use the DOF (external link)charts to get a rougher estimate on how far it's out - ie, take a shot of a ruler at an angle - at, say, 200mm, 2 metres away from subject and f/2.8 the range in front of subject is x mm and behind is y mm - obviously the shallower the DOF the better idea you can get on the level of "outness"

Not yet. Was holding off hoping that it could be sorted out civilly. If i hear nothing by mid day tomorrow, he is getting his first negative feedback in over a year...

And after a little more light digging, i found he has been leaving people feedback in the last day or so. So pretty much, ignoring my messages.

And just reading over more of his ads on his ebay store...

Buy with confidence from an eBay PowerSeller with a reputation of impeccable customer service.

bah!

Surely he meant to say "questionable"? "Non-existent"? "un-measurable"?

Well i sent him a quick, please explain message. Lets see if he responds this time. If not, its time for me to leave my first negative feedback.

Oh and here is the focus test chart for Dave

http://focustestchart.com/chart.html (external link)

Ok, after many tests with the 50, 100 and 70-200 (at various focal lengths), it would seem that none of my lenses have an issue, but the 400D does have a minor inconsistent focus issue (very slightly front focusing on the test, but only 1 in 5 shots at most).

I think therefore, I don't actually have a problem beyond the normal less-than-perfect 400D AF system. I'll re-run the tests on the weekend with Johnno's 5D just to compare.
