As people said buy for now. I have the 17-55 and 12-24 F4 and both work well, with image quality probably going to the 17-55.

Thanks, folks. So I've got it down to the 17-55 or the 17-40 L. I realize that I probably wouldn't need 2.8 for landscape, but it'd be nice to have one lens I could use indoors for social events as well.

Is anyone bothered by the 17-55 having the focus ring at the back of the lens, as opposed to the front, like the L's, or am I nit-picking? I know I need to get them both in my hands...

Why fixed?

You'll be shooting landscapes at 8/11 anyway..

Rivers...wading...as wide as you can on a crop body...fixed f/ ratio.

Canon 17-40 but you will need to screw on a filter of some type to maintain splash proof ness if I remember right.

If you want wider on a crop body...fixed f/ratio, BUT...not weather sealed...Tokina 12-24.

I don't even know where the zoom ring is, but my hand finds it easily.

17-40 ... yes, I believe you need to put on a UV filter of some kind to complete "weather sealing"

I got 17-40 over 17-55 because it's "L", "weather sealed", "useable when I upgrade to ff", and "cheaper".

f/2.8 on 17-55 made it tougher for me to go 17-40 ... but in your case, you are outside so "weather seal" is probably more important.

For the price of the 17-55, you could get the 17-40L plus a wide angle prime for indoor low light shooting. Just a thought, also one of the many "which lens combo" debates going on in my head.

I bought the 17-40 and am very happy with it - but if the 17-55 had been available, I'd have gone for that.

To be honest though, the 17-40 is probably a better landscape lens, so long as it suits your focal range preferences. but for all round versatility - that 17-55 IS lens is one special number!

I would love the convenience in all-around shooting. Guess I shouldn't have made it sound like landscape is all I would shoot...

First thing I've ever done with any lens is attach a quality UV filter...

I think 17 will be wide enough for my needs. Not a real big fan of UWA, though on occasion...

17-40 L or 17-55... (Where's the lens hood!?) , 17-55 or 17-40...

Thanks, that really helps me make up my mind!

Compared with what I've been using, either will be great-- but my procrastination has cost me a rebate! :(

Bear in mind that Canon only claim weather sealing for the 17-40 if it is used with a 1-series camera. I'm not sure if any other bodies are OK, but I seriously doubt the 450D is.
