whats your favorite photo magazine? I used to have a subscription to pop photo, but I didn't like the focus on cameras rather than the actual art/technique. A few lens tests never hurt though. So what mag do you recommend?

Really enjoy PDN (Photo District News), Digital Photo Pro is also on my list, and sometimes Studio Photography has a few good articles. And I still get a lot of inspiration from National Geographic. Oh, and every-once-in-a-while, American Photo.

I have a hard time reading photo mags because of all the advertisements! 1/4 content, 3/4 ads! But "American Photo" seems pretty interesting... seems to be a pleasant balance between art and hardware.

has it only recently been overtaken by popphoto, or has it always been an offshoot?

Haven't looked at a photo mag for over ten years. Too many ads, not enough content. If I want information about digital photography there are lots of interesting and very information books out there.

Ditto to Digital Photo Pro. A solid mix of interestingness, technique, and gear.

I also like American Photo (occassionally). The pictures of the year issue recently was worthwhile.

Pop Photo is good for about a year for a newbie. After that, they're beyond anything Pop Photo has to offer.

I still like Outdoor Phtography. Tried American Photo and didn't care for it at all.

i liked outdoor photo when i got one from the newsstand, but it's still a niche market. If you don't always shoot nature, a more general magazine is nice.

For 2 years I bought almost every UK magazine, obsessively...I stopped buying them when I realised that I could have paid for a 24-105L easily if i had kept my cash...:(
I subscribe to Eos Magazine clicky (external link) because it has great articles about how to use your eos gear , as well as great reader galleries. It does film and digital eos, but obviously the emphasis is on digital these days.

But most of the popular magazines seem to just continually recycle the same stuff - it doesn't take long before you have read it all. and to be honest , you'll get more informed opinion from many POTNers thatn from kost mags, imo!

I've got several subscriptions.. I like Outdoor Photographer (recent issue is a good one) and Shutterbug sometimes. I like Layers, but don't yet subscribe (I've been debating it as well as debating joining NAPP). National Geographic and National Geographic Adventure are good for nice pictures.. Either way, I look forward to any of them showing up in my mailbox. Gives me something better to read in the bathroom than American Baby and Parents magazines. :)

Holy c**p.. Just bothered doing the GBP -> USD for EOS magazine.. $62! For 4 magazines.. That's $15 an issue. Wow.. that had better be one amazing magazine for people in the US to pay that much. I understand shipping them across the world might be expensive, but that's a bit much. They need to come out with a PDF version subscription.
