Question for 40D users: I just bought the 40D this past weekend and I was wondering what you guys are using for the customized "My menu" setting?

Mine are:

  1. Flash control (so I can easily access external flash settings & custom functions for flash)
  2. Format
  3. AEB
  4. Live View function settings
  5. Mirror lockup
  6. Highlight Tone Priority

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you don't need to have FEC in your My Menu because you already have it on the top with your ISO setting.

FEC and Flash control are two different things. Yes, the FEC button on the top let's you adjust the flash exposure compensation. But the Flash Control gives you access to the custom functions and other settings relevant to the external flash.

2. Live View function settings
3. Highlight tone priority
4. White balance
5. Sensor cleaning
6. Format

With the 'Display from My Menu' option enabled, and the custom function so that the SET button goes to the menu display. So unless Live View is turned on, it's just a tap of the SET button to get to the menu.

Just wondering what the reasoning is for those who put "Format" in their My Menu? Isn't this the option to Format the memory card - and it erases everything? I very rarely use this feature.

I use it every time I shoot. Afterwards, obviously.

Formats/erases the contents of the CF card.

It can be used for those instances mentioned above, but I do it to format the card BEFORE I start to shoot....for a just in case measure. Don't want to receive a card error in the middle of shooting.

I have a card reader and take everything off through the computer. If I want to lose the file structure, of course you have to reformat in computer.
