I'm headed to Moab in the near future and I was wondering if this feature (external link) in Aperture 2 would allow me to darken a blue sky on a landscape shot, similar to what a CPL would do? I'm fairly new to photography (started last summer), but I'm even newer to adjusting photos after the shoot. Aperture 2 will be the first post-processing program that I have ever used.

Thanks,
Bryan

Nothing will do what a CPL will do, but increasing the blue saturation, contrast, and vibrance may give a similar effect.

Thanks Tim. That is what I surmised after lots of searching through other posts. I'm going to order a B+W MRC KSM CPL from hvstar, but it won't get here in time for my trip. I guess I could order one from a stateside dealer, but hvstar's prices are too good to pass up!

I would say the CPL will affect the image much more than blue sat, contrast, and vibrance changes will. CPL affects light in the entire image, subduing specific reflections.

I agree, a CPL is a very worthwhile investment. Dont forget though, it doesnt only do blue skies.

Thanks for the advice everyone -- I'm definitely getting one...I just can't order it from hvstar and get it here in time. (their price is way lower than anyone else's so I don't want to order from anyone else)

I figured in Moab I won't be shooting too many images with water in the scene and there's not much that is green this time of the year. So I was thinking that a good CPL would bring out the sky a little more. As soon as I get back, I'm ordering a good CPL and a ND grad...
