took my first moon shot tonight, my first attempts came out very very bright but i figured out that if you use a shutter speed of 1/500 you can get much better results.

Fred, welcome to the forum. If you take a look at some of the other moon shots that have been posted recently, many supply the ideal settings for taking moon shots.

Looks like you need a lens with a bit more reach. Nice try though.

what lens did you use?
try and crop it so you get the moon bigger in the picture. everyone posts a cropped shot to show the moon better.
also, it looks a bit out of focus. or probably camera shake? the moon will be full tonight i think from what it looked like last night so you can have another play (assuming the sky is clear)
edit: oops, just saw you used a G9. was it tripod mounted when you took it? have another go and i'm sure you'll get better ones. and keep posting them!

Hi,
I am very new to this forum but i think you should have used more zoom to click the moon. I tried once with my small movie cam with SD card. I got this image at 30X optical zoom.
Listen to the guidance of old members.
I tried to upload that snap for you, u will find it if i done it correctly.

cheers

those are a little better i guess but i think they could be even better if you used a shutter of 1/500

Fred, you don't need to use 1/500. I'm not sure how your camera operates, but try using an ISO of 100, f/11 and 1/160... a tripod and using the timer will help a lot.
